Word began trickling out over Twitter last week that Disney will be drastically redefining the state of the Star Wars lore, eliminating the bifurcated mainline/EU arrangement and in its place constructing a single official canon. All things that are part of the canon are "real," as far as Star Wars is concerned; all things not in the canon are "not real." This eliminates the quasi-real EU tier—going forward, things will either exist officially, or not at all.

Lucasfilm employee Leeland Chee, who currently maintains the internal LucasArts database that tracks the different elements of the canon, will be one of the folks making this decision. He tweeted that "Star Wars Canon is now determined by the Lucasfilm Story Group," which he and fellow Lucasfilm employee Pablo Hidalgo are part of. When asked specifically whether the group's goal was to eliminate the mainline/EU canon arrangement and its tiers of official-ness, Chee responded with a definitive yes. "More so than ever," he said, "the canon field will serve us internally simply for classification rather than setting hierarchy."

Now, no longer will there be a complex multi-level hierarchy of canonicity—there will simply be canon, and not.

Just thought I'd post this article, given all of the canon vs. non-can DBZ debates here I thought people might be interested.

I'm not into Star Wars so much that I've ever debated what's canon or not, but this is nice. It's good when there's an official word on what's "real" so fans can shut the f*** up, though that won't stop them from complaining if it isn't something they like.

Though it'll be interesting to see what they say is canon and non-canon specifically.

They better not deem the thrawn trilogy and hand of thrawn duology as "not real".

They might cut out all that weird s*** about Palpatine coming back at least twice. It was so stupid. I do hope they keep the Yuuzan Vong though. That was a pretty big plot point. I'd like to see Kyle Katarn too. Apart from that, they can do what they like for all I care. The expanded universe is a mess that needs some tidying, especially if they want to fit it into a trilogy.

Who is Disney to say what's "real" or "not real" ? George Lucas is the creator of Star Wars, so unless he has a say in this, I doubt people will care.

I'd rather George Lucas stayed well away.

He's still on as a consultant afaik? So he gets some say in it. That being said a lot of people would say that Lucas butchered the more recent stuff anyway.

I don't trust Disney enough to get it right to be honest. It'll be great if they manage to though.

I have more faith that Disney know what they're doing than George Lucas anyway. Though some of the fanboy tears over the precious EU being destroyed are rather hilarious.
