I once gave a Kangaroo a heart-attack just by staring at it

I'm sure some of you have heard about the (semi)recent phone-hacking scandal in the UK.

For those that don't know, it's known as "the Leveson Inquiry" which was a public inquiry into the ethics of and tactics used by Journalists. It was found that multiple editors and reporters for many UK-wide newspapers had been hacking into phones of murder victims and their families (among others).

You can read more about the Leveson Inquiry here

Naturally, it's called for a reform within the UK on how Journalists can get stories that are being told.

I actually study Journalism in university, so even though I find this an interesting case, I'm really interested from a career standpoint. So, the question I ask is this:

Are "espionage tactics" ever ethical in regards to reporting news and, if so, when?

I'm really interested to see what everybody thinks.

Crazy Awesome Legend

Only when it's for the benefit of the people. For instance if there's suspicion that a particular official or business tycoon is up to no good then I think it's right to snoop by any means necessary. Like what's going on with the French President right now Or Silvio Berlusconi the Italian President. But only if there's a suspicion of shady activity. You have to have a good reason for it. If all they are doing is tapping the phones of random celebrities looking to get a scoop for some s***ty gossip magazine then it's wrong. It's even worse when this is done to regular civilians because they are not expected to behave a certain way under media scrutiny. They aren't used to this kind of pressure or snooping whereas with celebrities they usually ask for it since they put themselves in the limelight in the first place. Not that this excuses some of the awful things the media has been found out to be doing of course.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Pretty much what Pelador said.

Why do we need to know that MP's like to wear womens underwear and get spanked? That's their private business, it hardly impedes their ability to run the country in any way. Sure people not in to that find it weird but it doesn't mean it should be reported.
That's especially bad if it's important people like MP's, what if they quit their job due to all the abuse and were actually in the running for being a great Prime Minister? The stress of being in the public eye about such things is also more likely to make them make bad decisions so it is really stupid to use these kind of underhanded tactics to get a scoop it only really harms the country, maybe only a little but enough.

If it's anything to do with war/terrorism/WMD's etc then it's ok but obviously should be carefully thought about.

Hacking a murder victims phone is just sick, people who do that deserve whatever comes to them, which would quite likely be assault by the hands of the victims family.
