I am considering starting DB and/or DBZ manga as a long-time anime fan. I am not too knowledge on manga in general though and i'm not sure which translation is considered more accurate? Viz is nice because I can use the Viz app but i've heard it is badly censored and/or flat out inaccurate at times to the point where entire phrases are reworded and the meanings are changed. Would fanslations be better if you already know the series by the anime? Edited by No. 20, Dec 31 2013, 04:02 AM.

Viz's translation is more than acceptable. A big step up from fanslations, and way, WAY more accurate than stuff like the old DBZ English dub. |

The old english dub is endearing though and accurate or not I regard it as a separate experience. Kai didn't impress me so much and lately i've discovered the manga is the only true book of law when it comes to discussions so I need to read if I want to participate in the more intricate debates. So it looks like I can't go wrong with Viz. Edited by No. 20, Dec 31 2013, 04:14 AM.

for strength based comparisons, this is probably your best source. herms is really accurate, much better than viz. |

list of canon sources: the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga. list of non canon sources: everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality. for those that blindly follow word of god | |

Herms wont get you anywhere if you dont know the context behind the quotes. If you want to just read the manga to participate better in discussions, you can read any fanslation and use Herms for reference. |

For the most part I read the Viz for my own private enjoyment and to better familiarize myself with the events though I know the anime up and down by heart. Been a fan since the original Toonami run though reading the manga chapter to chapter let's you know what is filler and what isn't. For debates I use scans in combination with Herms unless I can't track down a Herms quote for the particular panel then I just use the Viz and type it up myself. |

I've mostly memorized the manga apart from the Freeza arc backwards, so I can generally just grab a quote from Herms' thread and use it. For stuff I'm not so set on, I'll use Viz and Japanese RAWs. I'll use Viz for enjoyment and comparison as well; it ain't bad at all but it ain't Herms. |

You can read the fanslation ones if you want, you just won't be taken seriously in a debate if you use them. |

You know my stance on Herms though. As revered as he is in the community ultimately he is still just a fan and his translation is still just that; fan work. I know it's more accurate than the Viz and all that blah blah blah, it's just it doesn't sit right with me that we take his translation as the holy grail of all canon. Think about it; his translation holds no more weight than a Harvard graduate's with a major in linguistic studies. I don't know if that's a real major but you get the idea. If someone were to come along with potentially more credentials than Herms and say "well, Herms didn't quite encapsulate what the original Japanese text was trying to convey with this line..." or something then I wouldn't automatically defend Herms. He isn't infallible(though he'll be the first to admit that; he's an incredibly humble guy) Remember I'm the one who got Herms to register at Pojo of all places

Herms as definitely shown his knowledge and not just in the sense of translation but also in the Japanese language and the way the Kanji and other aspects of Japanese work and he points it out multiple times in the translations such as how someone said this which in Japanese means this and will give us the actual symbol to denote it. I believe he helped us to distinguish between "solar system" and "Galaxy" with the whole Beers comment, again something that involved not only a reading aspect, but an auditory point of Japanese understanding. Add in the fact that he's been doing this for at least 10 years (if not much longer) and its no wonder we have so much respect for him and use him. He's just shown throughout the years to have a very compact knowledge on the Japanese language inside and out and he's currently our best place in getting and retrieving information involving the original Japanese manga. |
