Here's the rundown...

It was originally just one comic series entitled "Dragon Ball." When it was animated for TV, at a certain point in the story it was split up and the second half of the story carried on as "Dragon Ball Z." So what was originally all one continuous comic was split into two separate TV shows.

Dragon Ball GT was an entirely new story set after the manga, created by Toei Animation (the animation studio doing DB and DBZ) and set after when the original comic ended. They had some really good story ideas, but with the original author's guidance being minimal, those ideas were usually carried out pretty badly.

Dragon Ball Kai was a recent effort from Toei to "refresh" and re-market the Dragon Ball Z portion of the show. They took out almost all the animated version's extra filler and fluff that was originally added for time padding, as well as reanimating some portions and using new voice recordings and music, all to end up with a more condensed and semi-modern version of DBZ. Kai was canceled after the first two of DBZ's three big story arcs, but the third is currently being produced and will be released soon.

My suggestions for how to experience the series:

Dragon Ball: Read the original manga, at least up to the part where the show split off and became "Dragon Ball Z" (but by all means, keep reading if you want). Viz's new 3-in-1 volumes are a good and cheap way to collect the manga if you want to. The English dub of Dragon Ball is decent if you want to watch the animated version, but the original Japanese version is a better bet.

Dragon Ball Z: Watch Kai instead, at least if you want to watch in English. The old English dub of Dragon Ball Z was a product of misguided 90's dubbing policies carried out by a still-fledgling and amateur studio, and despite a lot of fans' nostalgic affection for it, it is very, very bad. Definitely not the best way to introduce new fans to the series. But Kai was a once-in-a-lifetime "second chance" for FUNimation (the dubbing studio in question) to finally do the show right, and they succeeded with flying colors. If the final story arc (Majin Boo) isn't released yet, go ahead and watch the original Japanese version of it in DBZ.

Dragon Ball GT: Watch at your own risk. If you want to watch GT, make sure you're watching the original Japanese version, because the English dub suffered a lot of the same problems as DBZ's dub. If you must watch it in English, make sure you watch the version from the recent remastered editions, because then at least you have the option of the English voices with the original Japanese music instead of the awful replacement music FUNimation originally used for their dub.

Okay thanks.

Is providing download links allowed here?
I am unable to find any good torrent with good or terrible quality for Dragon Ball.
"No discussion of illegal activities such as where to get free episodes or manga."

But like most people said, DB -> DBZ -> DBGT.
Kai is the newest and shorter. Saiyan Saga -> Namek Saga -> Android Saga -> Cell Saga.
DBZ Remastered covers the whole Z story. Saiyan Saga -> Namek Saga -> Android Saga -> Cell Saga -> Tournament Saga -> Buu Saga

If you plan to watch in English, you might want to watch Kai and then pick up the Remastered when Kai ends.

Yeah, as far as releases go, the best for DBZ by far are the fancy collectible Dragon Boxes, but half of those are getting really rare and expensive.

If you want to collect the series, then I'd recommend...

Dragon Ball: The "blue brick" remastered sets. Five of them in total, decent remastering job, and FUNi's always used the original music and stuff for DB, unlike DBZ.

Dragon Ball Z: Collect Kai. It's the best way to go if you want to actually watch the series rather than just own something for a collection. The Majin Boo arc is on its way, but if you can't wait, then the orange brick "remastered" sets for that part of the series are acceptable. They're still cropped, but the "remastering" doesn't look like total garbage like for the earlier seasons. The old 3-episode sets are impractical and don't look good, and the upcoming new blu-ray seasons are cropped and over-remastered just like the orange bricks.

Dragon Ball GT: The "green brick" sets I mentioned above. You can find it either as separate "season one" and "season two" sets, or the singular "complete series" set I linked to.

Okay thank you for all this information but what's the difference between original Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Z remastered? Is there any difference or no difference at all?

Also, any download links?
IIRC the Remastered has some animation bugs fixed, and the dialogue is redone. Though I may just be thinking of the Uncut version. And that's the Uncut FUNimation version. I don't think Ocean ever released an uncut DBZ.
Anyway, my opinion is to watch it as they said, but don't ignore Kai. Even though it is just DBZ, with all the dialogue changes and some added remastering, it was... interesting to watch.
And I recommend watching Dragon Ball the whole way through. The first arc is something like a parody of Journey to the West, which is the s***. So Journey to the West with kamehamehas and kids transforming into giant gorillas? Booyah, man.

No matter what, just stick to the Uncut versions the whole way through. Most people hate Kai, but that's because they are unaware that there's an Uncut Kai.

You might want to check out the manga too.
If you're that type of person who prefers your stuff raw, steaming, and complete uncensored and untainted by corny and childish dubbing and mistranslations, the manga's the real way to go. Just sacrifice animation for looking at a page/screen. The only warning being that Dragon Ball (especially Dragon Ball) immediately shoots to an R rating.

imo you might like it better if you go through dbz first then db and watch it as a prequel, you wont miss anything by not watching db first, everything that you might miss they tell you in z basically.

but db is the best of the 3 imo ( don't think many others would agree) so start with one of those 2

Well, tOMMYpICKLES, the problem with this is that not many people know Dragon Ball even exists. And many of those who do think it's kiddy and trite. And without Super Saiyans, SUPASAIYAN THREE SWAG, and BROLY OMGZ!!!!1!!!, they have no intention of ever seeing it. So it's an automatic fantastic that people would disagree since they're ignorant to the awesomeness that is Dragon Ball.

It's true, I didn't know 'Dragon Ball' existed before getting here.

It goes DB to dbz to gt. Kai is the most recent one. It's dbz but with useless stuff cut out and script and the music is different. Watch DB first. You could actually skip up to episode 94 or 95 or somewhere around there. That's what did. I don't like most of the stuff before that. It's probably smarter to watch it all though
So Dragon Ball -> Dragon Ball Z -> Dragon Ball GT -> Dragon Ball Kai. That's how I watch it right?

Can download links be provided on this forum? I didn't see anything in the rules.

If they can be provided, then can someone provide me good quality torrents?

EDIT:
Do I watch Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z remastered?
What's the difference between them?
You don't have to watch kai at all. It's just a remade dbz where the dialogue is more true to the manga(comics). Personally I don't like kai because the voices aren't as good and neither is the music. Also some of the "useless" stuff was actually pretty fun to watch
I tend to agree. Kai was first and foremost a business move to sell more DVDs and get DBZ back on the air.

The result is, in my opinion, a poor overall experience. The dialogue is over-the-top in both substance and execution, and the entire series is painfully over-acted.

The music is downright awful, repetitive and often plays rampantly through entire dialogue exchanges at a high volume such that it is difficult to understand the characters at times.

The opening sequence is...just a bunch of hustle and bustle shiny new animation which again doesn't represent the atmosphere of DBZ at all and is more suited to a video game release.

The fights end quicker than they should, and some epic encounters in the original anime feel cheap and rushed and are over quickly. It does play out more like the manga but that isn't always a good thing. DBZ became as big as it is now because of the anime, not the manga.

If you ask me, try and watch either the original Ocean dub (Saiyan saga/early Namek is now released on DVD) and continue where that end with the original funimation DVD singles (not the cropped Orange Boxes).
