The whole "Education being more important than saving the world" gag is supposed to be seen as a joke and "funny" by the fans, but really it comes off as being irrational and stupid. While she's not perfect, like you said, her whole skewed priorities doesn't rub off on her son and he is shown to be more rational when in the Super Android 13 movie, he asked her the armor-piercing question. Gohan asks the eternal Question Edited by ILikeSugar22, Dec 27 2013, 08:49 PM.

While Chi-Chi was annoying, she wasn't a bad parent. Goku on the other hand - i think he spent more time prancing around in hell than actually raising his kids. Also, I suspect he used the whole being dead thing as an excuse to avoid raising his own kids. |

I wouldn't say it annoys me since I'm not really that bothered either way, but I don't think it's fair to judge their parenting (particularly Goku's) based on current day standards. While Goku looks human, he's still a Saiyan and has all of the Saiyan traits. Personally I think he'd be parent of the year if Saiyans were still around. |

Chichi can be an irrational parent, but ultimately, she isn't a bad one. The "Saiyan" excuse doesn't fly when Vegeta (post Cell games) is shown to be a significantly better parent than Goku despite spending more time in direct Saiyan contact. Vegeta's main problem really is his personality; he actually does try to be a good father. Goku's just an absolutely horrible parent by absolutely every standard imaginable. You can filmsly defend him not wanting to be wished back (its not a good reason but you can, at least, defend it). What you CAN'T defend is what he plans to do with Uub. Outside of the very beginning of the series, you really don't get the fatherly vibe from Goku towards Gohan (and even moreso with Goten). In contrast, Piccolo (who spent even LESS time with others) Krillin and Bulma really do have a stronger claims to the parental role for (at least) Gohan. Honestly, if Gohan had deep seeded resentment towards Goku, it really wouldn't be a surprise. Edited by Muyasuki, Dec 28 2013, 06:08 AM.

Was Vegeta really shown to that good of a father though? I remember the fact that he had never hugged him prior to his (super badass) Final Explosion thingy was a pretty strong element in Buu Saga. |

Let's give him a little credit for sticking with Bulma and marrying her after not being mowed down by Cell. At least Bulma wasn't chasing him down on the DBZ version of Maury for a paternity test. I really need to learn to animate, I could picture Maury saying "Yamucha....you are NOT! the father."

I don't know who calls Chi Chi a bad mom in the first place, but no. Goku IS a poor father. He's never there for his kid unless it's for training. |

8 out of what 11 years? Seeing that Goku was only missing 1 year due to dying FOR his son and another on Yardrat, by the time Gohan turned 11 Goku was only missing for 2 years. Then he misses 7 for the "dumb" reason that Bulma brought up years before he even realized it. And after that he spend 10 years with everyone totaling a good 19 years. Gohan by then is 28 and Goten is about 17. Those are plenty of years to get to know your sons. Not to mention that Goku went missing both times because he saved Gohan. Not the best parent but certainly not the worse or heinous as some might portray him as. He's pretty much the saiyan equivalent of that dad who goes on business meetings all the time. |

To me, if Goku and Chi-Chi were outright hateful towards Gohan, the bashing would be well-deserved, but the fanbase demonizes them and makes them out to abuaive parents who need to require social services to take their kids.

It doesn't annoy me because even Toriyama admits that Goku's a bad parent. He did in an interview in one of the Daizenshuu guides. |
