From what we can tell, Freeza's so called "Death Beam" relies not so much on its piercing ability so much as its insane speed. Until Zenkai Vegeta came around, nobody could even see the attack. The only thing they saw was a flash of light and suddenly, a person dies, it was beyond their comprehension and it was made it so terrifying.

Google Chrome	Oh yeah, Goku b*** slaps an entire set away from him in their first scuffle and SSJ Goku tanks one with his face. Death Beam's specialty is apparently speed judging by Frieza's comment that "NO ONE EVER DODGES THAT!"
