How does immortality work?

Just saw SSJ1993's thread, and it had me thinking. Say Freeza became immortal, what what happen to his body? Would it just mean he could live naturally forever, and die by unnatural causes? Or would his body become so durable that nobody could kill him? Freeza seemed to think that immortality would be a game changer against SSJ Goku, so you would have to think it has some serious benefits.

Super Saiyan among Super Saiyans

There are various notions of what immortality would entail.

1) Immortality could simply mean that one cannot naturally die. Under this strict definition, someone could still kill you as that would be an unnatural death. This is probably not the DBZ immortality as they were scared of Vegeta and Frieza acquiring immortality and if you count Garlic Jr, Garlic Jr was unable to be killed

2) Immortality could mean that no one can kill you and that your body will repair itself. This is most likely the type mentioned in DBZ if going by the Garlic Jr filler

3) Immortality could mean that no one can kill you but your body is still suspect to being torn apart. Your consciousness would survivie but your body is fair game

If I were ever in the DBZ universe and were uncertain if definition (2) actually applied for Immortality, I would wish for Invulnerability instead so as to not potentially run into (1) or (3)
We Super Saiyans are in a league of our own.

I think Majin Buu defines immortality in Dragon Ball. One would live forever and regenerate from anything left of one's body.

Great question. I always wondered the same thing. Like your power level. Would being immortal mean your power level's infinite since you can never die and never be beaten? Or does your PL remain the same you just can't die? That seemed to be what Freeza thought and had me thinking as a kid.

Wasn't Roshi immortal? Or was that a Toei add in?

If Roshi is then it would explain a lot.

I thought Roshi lied about the elixir granting immortality.

I don't know if he did Alex.
It's likely that the elixer gives you the ability to live forever under natural circumstances (as in age and time have no effect on your life span) but he could die from unnatural means.
Roshi's already over 300 years old when we first see him in the series, and he's not the only Earth bound being like this. Karin is over 800 and Baba is over 600.

I would imagine that absolute immortality would be incredibly painful. Imagine fighting someone a lot stronger than yourself who just runs you through repeatedly, but you can't die. And just because you're immortal doesn't mean that your body can regenerate. You can get your head blown off, but still be alive.

immortality likely means roshi style immortality. you can be killed, you just don't age anymore. i say this because that is the immortality that is known to exist in the db world, and i doubt the dragon would introduce an entirely new form when one already existed. this would still be a powerful tool in the hands of someone like vegeta or frieza, who would then have eternity to continue getting stronger.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

for those that blindly follow word of god

Though, this definition would not have solved Vegeta's immediate extreme-refrigeration problem on Namek.

Vegeta's assumption that "immortality" would solve his problem leads me to the conclusion that he believed it to be more akin to invulnerability. The dragon has been shown to grant wishes based on intent, and also literal statements (aka Piccolo arriving "on Namek"), so the answer to whether he would've received his desired version of immortality or not lies only in the mind of a very specific aging Japanese bird-man.

Without reading everyone's reply to this thread, my notion of immortality is that the person couldn't die, period. It's what made Vegeta confident he could finally beat Frieza if he were able to achieve it. If it was just not dying of natural causes then Vegeta wouldn't have been very confident, even while immortal, against Frieza as he would just kill Vegeta. If that were the case.

BTW, Lunar. I like your signature. That is what I use as "source" material as well. Anime, video games and even the guide books need apply when arguing canon.

The resident GT fan!

Lol he just can't die by anything.

-He can't die by natural causes(age)that's what Frieza was after in the first place,he said he wanted to claim the DragonBalls before he dies from old age lol

-He can't die by even by a being who is millions of times above him,Vegeta stated multiple times in the manga that if he can't die, he will eventually warn Frieza down and beat him up
