We see base Gohan fighting SSJ Trunks, A base Saiyan can certainly be equal to or stronger than a SSJ depending on the base strength of the SSJ.
Then again, we don't know the context of that fight precisely. Gohan didn't look tired at all while Trunks looked exhausted. We could've been seeing the tail end of it.
Perhaps, but I don't see Trunks being that much weaker than his full power self.

yes, one could. how? because the strength of an ssj depends on the base. if the base form of Goku is over 50 times stronger than the base of say, Goten, then when he goes super saiyan he still won't be stronger than goku who is over 50x stronger than goten. (using the ssj multiplier)

This entire discussion comes down to if you take Beerus word as canon in BOG. If so, you will obviously not place base Saiyans anywhere near 100% Frieza. If not, well, then there's still quite an argument to be made for both sides but as for me, if you take his statement in the negative then I do believe there is enough evidence in the manga to suggest base Saiyains>Piccolo(Buu saga).

It mostly stems from a couple of throw away lines in the early Buu saga where Dabra tells Babidi that he got "rid of the trash" and only let the strongest fighters come in. He says this while Vegeta, Goku and Gohan are still in their base. It makes sense too, as Babidi wants the most amount of energy supplied to Buu. Piccolo wasn't up to par, the base Saiyans were.

Because this topic is about the Super Saiyans that we saw. Hypothetical Super Saiyans are not real, therefore they do not count.

In my opinion there is a fair amount of manga evidence to show that Base Saiyans > Freeza/SSJ Tier, however Battle of Gods says otherwise.
Could you elaborate on how exactly it does that? I haven't watched the movie ;(

The resident GT fan!

Of course they could in my opinion,Base Goku from Buu Arc>SSJ Goku from Android arc,we also literally saw Base Goku in GT beating SSJ Baby Gohan and Goten combine no problem, although that's non canon :D
