Novacane for the pain

It's that time of year again, so everyone go to your favourite anime forums and watch everyone b*** at each other as if these things really mattered. So, the Top 30 are as follows:

Quote:

01. One Piece (18,151,599)
02. Shingeki no Kyojin (15,933,801)
03. Kuroko no Basket (8,761,081)
04. Magi (7,151,001)
05. Naruto (5,553,933)
06. Gin no Saji (4,858,699)
07. Ansatsu Kyous***su (4,595,820)
08. Hunter x Hunter (4,231,475)
09. Fairy Tail (3,790,151)
10. Terra Formars (3,602,630)
11. Kimi ni Todoke (3,428,351)
12. Gintama (2,864,734)
13. Toriko (2,844,248)
14. Kingdom (2,805,945)
15. Bleach (2,752,588)
16. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (2,588,910)
17. Uchuu Kyoudai (2,543,140)
18. Saint☆Oniisan (2,487,751)
19. Ao no Exorcist (2,329,721)
20. Chihayafuru (2,311,857)
21. Aoharide (2,106,452)
22. Haikyuu!! (2,056,211)
23. Daiya no Ace (2,010,045)
24. Meitantei Conan (1,966,206)
25. Sket Dance (1,783,098)
26. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Bunkoban (1,864,749)
27. Tokyo Ghoul (1,666,348)
28. Kuros***suji (1,562,863)
29. To Love-Ru Darkness (1,558,973)
30. Nisekoi (1,542,417)

Some things to mention:

- Shingeki no Kyojin will probably never get these numbers again. It's so high because the Anime hype caused everyone to go back and buy all 11 volumes of it, meaning they had 11 volumes all getting high sales in the same year. Most other series tend to only have 2-4 volumes getting significant sales a year.
- Most long running series are down on last year. One Piece fell 5 million volumes, Naruto fell ~800,000 all told. HxH is down (though incredibly it's still in the Top 10 despite NO chapters being released at all in 2013), Fairy Tail is down etc. It's mostly newer series with Anime etc that have gotten increases.
- Overall not really good reading for the manga industry, sales overall continue to decline. Piracy is slowly but surely killing it.

I do think piracy is a lot of it, but at the same time more of these manga publishers need to embrace e-readers (some have), especially in the U.S. Printed media is dying in general, and there isn't a hardcore collector market for manga as with comics (I still think in the long run Viz was wrong to stop releasing their series that way for that exact reason). I would love to be able to read a new chapter of Berserk on my Kindle when it hit, for instance, but right now only the Japanese market gets digital releases at all and even then only older collected volumes.

Also, I'm amazed at how far down in quality the manga series still being published have gone (no offense if you like a bunch of those). Of that list, the only ones I care about at all are One Piece and Hunter x Hunter (Bleach jumped the shark for me anyway, Naruto is okay but I haven't gotten around to catching up in a long time).

Viz is pretty good for that, most of their manga gets digital releases as well and their version of Weekly Shonen Jump is a digital release too (I have it on my iPad).

As for the quality, yeah it's a problem. The issue is a lot of the traditional long runners are coming to an end and they try to replace them with more of the same. We don't need another Naruto or Bleach, we've had them for years and there's plenty of battle manga still going. There's too much pandering going on as well, they want every manga to feature certain stereotypes to get a fanbase going to make it sell and it's becoming over saturated with the same series.

Formerly known as daman

Me and daman are glad to see Space Brothers at #17.

I wonder how Gintama's anime ending/being on hiatus will effect manga sales in the future.

I'm still surprised Toriko is above bleach. Is it really that good? It's supposed to takes its place in HST but it doesn't seem like people are acknowledging that yet
