Why Is Broly So Popular In The West?; I Bet This Has Been Asked Before, Bear With Me

Sorry if I haven't lurked enough to pull a pre-existing thread about this. So my question is what it is: why exactly is Broly so huge with Western Fans, while he's little more than a joke to Japanese fans?

My hypothesis: the West has a love affair with big, burly, hypermasculine things. Broly is a wall of muscle, mindless, and psychotic. He just blows dgit up without conscious. No rhyme, no reason. Even a chibi Broly couldn't be stretched into being called "cute."

The bastard can take on Hell and win. Muscles the size of a mountain and empty, demonic eyes at all times= American boys love this thing. Not to mention he's repeatedly mentioned as to have an ever-increasing power. I bet this was a misunderstanding since I've heard people say that SSJ Goku's power was ever-increasing (obviously false) so they took it and a few scenes from his movie as meaning that Broly's power can theoretically reach infinity if given the time. Finally, he dominated the Z warriors effortlessly. Never mind that every DBZ movie had its big bad dominate the Z warriors at some point, but it was special for Broly and the fans tried to make it even more special. "His debut movie is the longest movie! (Before BoG)" "He's the only villainous Super Saiyan!" "He's the LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN!!!!1!!" (I always thought "Legendary Super Saiyan" was more of a title of honor rather than some form, i.e. me referring to it as "legendary Super Saiyan" and not "Legendary Super Saiyan" before the Broly movie).

Not forgetting that the games have also played up Broly's importance and status, you also notice that, in many games, Broly is the best character. I recently played Sagas and very duly noted that Broly is the only character who's naturally a Super Saiyan. On top of that, his attacks are absurdly, bafflingly strong. Now, don't get me wrong, that whole game is screwy (like how Super Saiyan Goku deals little damage to Raditz), but with Broly it's one hit kill for anything and everything except the bosses.
I remember Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans throwing Broly in there too. He's just that popular, and, while I remain a fan (THOSE EMPTY EYES, MAN!), I just feel he's undergoing Wolverine Publicity with Dragon Ball.

In Japan, there's an obsession with small things. Not everything, mind you, but the Japanese seem to love downsizing everything. Not only that, but Broly's very character is aggressiveness personified. The Japanese have a culture that seems to look down on mindless aggression. To him, he's nothing more than a gag.

Interesting if you ask me and I feel that several bits of my analysis are inaccurate. Anyone care to expand/link to a previous thread?

Think of it as how a Saiyan's entire outfit can change if they go Super Saiyan.

So....His shoes are Super Saiyan 4?

You hit the nail on the head, Broly's army of fanboys probably also get ammuntion from BT3 and B3 where Broly fights Gogeta evenly as well as RB, where he gets SSJ3

People who like Broly like the fact that he is big muscled Guy that beats up everybody and doesn't mess around unlike most villains.
I personaly think that Broly only works when they interduce new characters to make up for his lack of depth. In the first movie we had his dad and an entire race. in the second movie The only new character besides him had small depth and was forgettable. the third Movie we have the same Forgottable jerk and another Forgettable jerk. so the first movie worked while the other two did not.

Super Saiyan among Super Saiyans

It is because Super Saiyan is so popular. Broly is the Legendary Super Saiyan. So thus, he is a very popular character. Honestly, if Broly were some other kind of powerful villain that wasn't the Legendary Super Saiyan, like Bojack for instance, IMO, he wouldn't be nearly as popular as he is now
We Super Saiyans are in a league of our own.

That's why I liked the idea of him as well. It seems crazy that there weren't a few other Saiyans out there somehwere considering how easy space travel seems to be, so it both made sense and gave us some extra SSJ fights.

I wonder why Bojack did not become popular.
I admit that He is not THAT awesome as he basicly just stared as his minions did the action for him most of the episode and that He does not have a true Motivation.
But he was kinda cool, the way his minions worshipped him and the fact that he killed one of them while smiling was kinda cool.

Bojack was awesome IMO. I think the reason he doesn't have a fanbase is because Goku doesn't appear in it

Broly is popular and is considered very powerfull because of some games like Budokai 3 or Tecknaqui,in the first one he was shown to be fighting Gogeta and in the game stroy you're fighting him with a SSj4 Goku!lol!in tekcnique he has LSSj3 but mistake....also he seems like the anime Hulk so many people like him because of this
And finally because they think Broly has unlimited power, they think that Broly is getting more powerfull by the second to the point he can beat all the DBZ and GT verse, while the truth is,he just has infinite amount of supply power,or if you like it more infinite stamina like the Androids :)

The games are the ultimate reason Broly is so powerful and why Broly fans rank him so high. The fact that he is a evil super saiyan is the second reason.

Yeah, Budokai 3 and BT3 make him not only the most OP character, they make him even with Gogeta in the cutscenes. Burst Limit is similar with Broly beating the snot out of SSJ2 Kid Gohan but being afraid of SSJ2 Goku. Not to mention Raging Blast, which has LSSJ3
