Novacane for the pain

I've touched on this a couple of times but this is one thing that seriously pisses me off with Kubo. As we know, Bleach has a massive cast even for a Shonen and because anyone hardly ever dies, pretty much every protagonist ever introduced is still knocking around, waiting to be relevant. The problem is, Kubo has no idea how to handle a cast this big, none at all and it shows.

Now, I understand certain characters taking up a lot more panel time. Ichigo and his main friends should of course get more focus (although in the last two arcs now that actually hasn't been the case really). However, when it comes to the Captains, who are sort of more on the outskirts, surely there should be more variation? Not according to Kubo! With the Captains, you can guarantee that in every single arc Byakuya, Hitsugaya and Kenpachi will get an extended fight scene or do something to look total badass. Meanwhile, Shinji (yes I'm still mad) has still not had one full on panel fight, Rose only got one in tandem with Love before getting his a*** kicked against Aizen, Ukitake has only had like a very brief scuffle with Starrk, his only panel fight, Unohana has fought once in the whole series and only served as fodder to give Kenpachi another powerup.

This is ridiculous. When you have a big cast and focus on only a few characters (none of which have any plot reason to be more relevant at all) it is to the detriment of your series. It's also clearly pandering to the fanbase by showcasing their favourites and pushing everyone else to the side. The biggest and most blatant example of this is in the Fullbring Arc. So, the Shiningami return for the first time in 18 months (in-universe time, though roughly a year our time) and Ichigo gets his powers back. So, you'd think that they'd include people close to Ichigo right? Well, they've got Rukia (duh) Renji (probably his best Shinigami friend) Ikkakku (first Shinigami Ichigo fought in Soul Society, helped Ichigo out) Kenpachi (probably biggest rival, also had a fight with him), Byakuya (rivalry, backstory with him, Byakuya is probably one of Ichigo's biggest supporters now) and Hitsugaya.

What?! Why the f*** is Hitsugaya there? I can only think of one time where he and Ichigo have exchanged any dialogue. There is no plot related reason for him to go ahead of Shinji, who is actually friends with Ichigo. Heck, even Rose is more relevant to him than Hitsugaya. Now, some people say "Oh but the Visoreds being Captains again was a surprise later on" which is bulls***. That "reveal" basically had Ichigo saying "Oh, you're in Soul Society again, that's nice" and pretty much moved on. Shinji appearing with the other Shinigami would have had the exact same effect. The only reason Hitsugaya was there is he's popular with the fans and Kubo needed to get his ratings up, that's it. It's just so frustrating.

No one dies in One Piece either.
Hiatus x Messed up Drawings is often praised.

Where is the equivalent exchange in that?

I don't care that no one dies (except when people survive in bulls*** ways, like Hiyori), the only reason I brought it up is because the big cast never gets smaller, people are just pushed to the side for no reason whatsoever. At least in One Piece there's a reason for all these people not to show up, because the Strawhats travel from place to place. Half the Shinigami are just sort of there doing nothing or if they are doing something we don't get to see it.

Hunter x Hunter has nothing to do with anything I said. I don't really get your point.

Hunter x Hunter?

I totally see your point though. I can't think of anyone in Bleach I care less about than Byakuya and Hitsugaya. Neither of them are really that fun to look at any more either, they've pretty much shown everything they've got. Meanwhile all the more mysterious characters like Shinji (and well s***, pretty much everyone else) are doomed to stay mysterious.

I think we should have an intervention with Kubo.
