A couple of days ago, I was ranting on the shoutbox about how stupid and biased my English teacher was. Well I am about to show you what I meant. The task we had to do was read 4-5 short stories, and she assigned sentences to us. The job was to try and mimick the sentence structure of each sentence to the best of your ability. Here is mine: lol sideways Does this even make sense? I asked her why I was docked 25%, and her words were, "Your sentences were well written, but I didn't like the use of punctuation in your last one." So that means I lose 25 f***ing percent? What do you people think about this nonsense? It is happening with every assignments, even e bigger essays too. She is docking marks from only the guys for stupid s*** like this. And to brighten the mood, here is a picture of my cat ![]() Spoiler: click to toggle Lol I don't know why my iPad pictures keep coming out sideways. |

25% seems like an absurd amount to be docked off for her not liking your punctuation once lol. you should have asked to see clasemates work and see if she is marking them the same. if you find one where she is favoring them more then you take it to her why you are getting docked more points. if I cared in school I would be upset if I were you oh btw your cat looks cool Edited by tOMMY pICKLES, Oct 20 2013, 06:27 PM.

Yeah the guy beside me got like a 2-, and most of the other guys got below level 3 too. It is really just absurd how critical she is of punctuation, but the girls that she likes still manage to get a 4, even if their grammar is terrible. |

Not yet, that is what I'm going to do this week. We have a lot of work due early in the week, so I'm curious to see how she marks it. |

Makes about as much sense as the time I failed a maths test for poor spelling. Do you have anyone at the school you can go to in order to complain? If the marks count towards something, then there should be someone you can go to. |

Yes, I can talk to my old English teacher who is the head of the English department. If she agrees that my teacher is being unfair, she can probably get her to raise our marks back up. And the thing is, it's not even just small assignments like this. We had a reading quiz to make sure we actually read our book, and even though I got every question right I only got a level 3. She didn't like my grammar in a few areas, so I lost 25% again. |

Reminds me of my English teacher. She complimented a friend of mine for writing a "Strong Essay!"...and docked 20% for misspelling the name of some author. Either way, doesn't make a lick of sense and your teacher's clearly biased for some reason. I'd complain ASAP if I were you. If you care about your grades, it would be stupid to have your marks drop by a letter grade or two over something like this. |

Probably because your use of punctuation makes her feel oppressed. You should be more considerate. Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm glad I've never encountered anything like that. My English teachers never put much emphasis on my punctuation, it was much more important if the essay or whatever had good analysis and is well organized. I can understand docking something for punctuation in your case, since you're supposed to mimic sentence structure, but 25% is way out of line. |

There were only four questions, and she even said that she liked my fourth one with the comma in it. @Illogical, the funny part was the sentence I was trying to mimic also had a comma in it lol. Edited by SSJ, Oct 20 2013, 08:15 PM.

This reminds me of my final essay in my Politics class. Me: Hey Mr.B! How did I do on my essay? Mr.B: I really liked it! As a matter of fact, this is the best work you've done in the semester! Me: Really? I can't wait to see it! Reads papaer, 65% Me: (Facepalm) Edited by Yusuke, Oct 20 2013, 08:29 PM.

Do you have a bigger picture? I kinda wanted to read it I think the school system in general is flawed. People usually get graded based on their ability to remember particular facts, which while can be important, isn't as good as people being taught how to think for themselves IMO. I'd complain to the head of department (like you said you would ), punctuation isn't so important that you'd take a hammer to someones paper with it. At least half the people I know have terrible punctuation and they're rolling along just fine.
