So what are the Dutch and Japanese doing right?

Experts suggest it has to do with a complex combination of genetic, environmental and social factors.
I find it dumb when people blame genetics. Yeah you might be predisposed to being fat and are more susceptible to putting on weight, but that doesn't mean you can't do anything about it.

I was a scrawny kid but got fat in my early teen years before losing a lot of it later on, and my weight still fluctuates now from slim to overweight and back again, and so on, so I'm not hating or anything -- I just think people should take responsibility for how they are instead of suggesting that it's due to something they have no control over and then not doing anything about it.

I agree with that buuberries. I don't believe genetics has anything to do with it.

@pointer- if you look at wcw videos of big show, he was a lot more ripped than he is today so yeah he can control how healthy he is.

Everyone has different body types, but every body type has a weight one should be at. There really isn't an excuse.

@pointer Yeah there are body types, but those mostly dictate your bone and build structure and how your body behaves, and not how healthy you are. I'm assuming you're talking about the body types such as endomorph, ectomorph, and mesomorph, and the variations you get in between.

If we take endomorph as an example, that just means they're more suspecptible to putting on weight and it's natural for them to be big. That doesn't mean they can't be and look healthy by watching what they eat and doing the right types of exercises. I'm a mixture of mesomorph and endomorph -- I have a somewhat large frame size and it's easy for my body to put on muscle and burn fat, but at the same time I put on fat like a mofo if I don't watch what I eat and do some cardio every now and again.

I'm not saying everyone should have a bodybuilder type body -- I actually prefer functional bodies more than the aesthetic look -- and have stupidly low bodyfat percentages like 5% or whatever, but having it too high despite however strong you might be is still unhealthy.

I agree. Genetics do play a part, but the blame is on your lifestyle/eating habits. Pure and simple.

My weight also fluctuates between overweight and average, and guess what? That depends on my activity and food intake. I lose weight easily and gain weight easily. If I eat trash and don't exercise, I get fat. When I decide I've had enough and it's getting out of hand, I change my diet and I exercise, and I lose weight. It's that simple.

Weeeellll, you also need to look at the concept of 'average.' In a generated simulation like this, I'm sure they meant the 'mean,' which is the average weight of all actual american men in their thirties gained by a census, added and divided by the amount of people. We DO have the most obese people. We have people close to reaching 1000 pounds on a level these other countries don't have. So wouldn't that effect our average? It doesn't mean that most thirty year old guys are pudgy, it means that we have people who are so heavy they shoot up the average.

It's like those people suing Mcdonalds and blaming them for making America fat. Yes, they are scumbags but I don't see the people complaining and not stopping going. They are like "McDonalds makes me fat, f*** them" *walks into mcdonalds buys a supersized burger and supersized coke.

It's always the persons fault unless they are a child who gets fed by their parents. Genetics could play a part, but hardly.

Lamm constructed the 3D models based on body measurements collected from thousands of men by universities and government agencies -- including the CDC, the Netherlands' RIVM, and France's ENNS. The average American male has a body mass index (BMI) of 29 -- significantly higher than Japanese men (who have a BMI of 23), men in the Netherlands (who have a 25.2 BMI), and French men (who have a 25.55 BMI.)

Lamm said he used BMI charts and photos for visual reference, and ran the models by Dr. Matthew Reed, an expert on body shape measurement, for accuracy.

It's all a matter of statistics to me. I believe we should take care of ourselves though.

When you have so much cheap food available everywhere then why is it a surprise that you get over weight people?

s***, I think we pride ourselves on having such a fat country sometimes. I mean, look at some of the choices on menus (octo-burger), and man, those eating challenges!

BMI isnt all that trust worthy
http://www.alternet.org/personal-health/being-fat-disease-american-medical-association-says-yes-though-its-definition

nowadays, genetics take a huge part, theres studies everywhere

sure u can try to be healthy and work out but its hard and almost imposible to lose so much weight

if its naturally done thats different, i was born a chubby baby and grew up chubby beacuse of the food i ate

later on i was ridiculously healthy due to the choices i made so in middle school to highschool

now im a bit fat again but i can change that easily, see things like this are easy to alter

but if u are like 10 and wiegh like 150 pounds regardless if your eating healthy or not thats very very hard weight to lose, due to genetics

a lot of people nowadays would have to due some extreme work out s*** to get in shape

There are also psychological factors that are going to come into play with some people, kind of odd that genetics would be mentioned over that because a psychological illness is going to play more of a role than genetics.
