This has to do with a lot of bogus calls I have seen this year with defensive players making stops. I understand that players need to be protected because of how serious injuries can be in the NFL. However, I feel like some players are "really really" protected. It seems today that defensive players are limited. For instance, when the Giants played the bears, I saw that JPP lightly tapped Cutler on the helmet, and it was a penalty. The commentators were saying how it was a crazy call because JPP just tapped him, and it was a big/costly penalty. This isn't just in the Giants game though. I've seen some other bogus calls especially pass interference calls. It seems like any tug or any minor touch can be a penalty. Football is a contact sport, which is why I feel like there should be some balance. I feel like some penalties/rules have hindered the defense to do anything especially against read-option quarterbacks. Thoughts? |

The people making these new rules should be fired immediately I could do a better job. Firstly, I saw someone get flagged for going in with their shoulder (NOT their helmet) and because the offensive player lowered their head they made shoulder to helmet contact which of course is a penalty. And defenseless receiver is the stupidest s*** I have ever seen. By hitting them right when they get it, it can cause them to drop the ball. But now you can't? Fine, let them catch everything easily! I understand no helmet contact, but if you go in with the shoulder to their body, what is the problem? Fix your penalties Goodell, you suck. I still don't understand how to tell if something is defenseless receiver, wtf is this stupid rule. Also, I understand protecting the QB, but getting a 15 yard penalty for accidently TAPPING the helmet is dumb. The QB won't even feel it. IF they are getting flagged for tapping the helmet, then they should get flagged for tackling the QB to the ground. Because that is truly what will hurt them. All these new rules are stupid and they have to be taken out, they just hurt the game. Helmet to helmet should stay though, but start flagging offensive players lowering their head. Even the defensive players are visibly confused when they get flagged, they don't know what to do to avoid these penalties. Edited by Master Gohan, Oct 15 2013, 07:36 PM.

I absolutely agree with everything you said Gohan. I'm not the one getting hit out there, but at the same time, NFL players know what they sign up for if they are playing a contact sport. I don't wish for anyone to get hurt. At the same time, I believe in fair play. If the defense can't defend because of bogus penalties, then it makes it virtually impossible to have a clean game or a defensive game like in the old days. There was another problem too with the helmet to helmet penalty that they mentioned in the commentary when I watched the Redskins vs Cowboys game. It makes it nearly impossible for a defensive player to make an appropriate stop because what ends up happening is that the offensive players lower their heads. If they lower their heads, it's really hard to tackle someone like that without causing a penalty. |

I never supported defenseless receiver rules. Are the receivers not expecting to get drilled if they catch a ball over the middle or something lol? However, they did somewhat give the defenders an advantage this offseason. Made it illegal for an offensive player to lower his head outside of the tackling box, though I've yet to see that called. |

I think the rules are fine. They just need to be enforced differently. Fine guys left and right, I don't care. They can afford it and the money goes to charity, but the penalties should be enforced differently. A player should only get a flag if it is clear that they had malicious intent in my opinion. |

Not really. Defenseless receiver is probably the dumbest idea ever. For it to be called, a player just needs to hit a receiver straight after not even helmet to helmet. This is stupid because its good defense to make an attempt to knock the ball away. Defense has zero advantage with these new rules. Edited by Master Gohan, Oct 18 2013, 10:17 PM.

It's essentially become a QB/WR era in football "Does he have the ball now? Got his bearings? Great! You can tackle him now" |

This is impossible to tell in the split second that a referee watches a play. I can't imagine it being easy in the NFL to tell if it was intentional or not especially when some hits are extremely hard naturally. As much as we want to say that malicious intent can be determined , it just puts more pressure on the referees to get the play call right in that split second. These rules such as defenseless receiver, no hitting to the helmet, a shaky passing interference call, and/or roughing the passer makes it much easier for an offense to utilize this to their advantage especially if they have read-option quarterbacks which is why they have become favorable today. The NFL will never have or see a defense like the Steelers of the 70's and the Bears of 85 because of these rules. The game has changed to favor offensive players too much. |

You are allowed to hit a quarterback that has handed the football off during the read option if he says in the running position. RG3 has been handing the ball off and then backing away, so it was obvious that it's a running play. |

Yes I get it. But it makes no sense that a rough hit on a QB doesn't get flagged but a light touch to the helmet does. Do you guys not get the comparison? Guy gets absolutely crushed and its ok. Light tap FLAG FLAG FLAG. Like if I punch you in the face, no problem.. I tap you on the shoulder, suspended from school. |

The NFL is in the concussion era. same with the NHL. a clean hit 5 years ago in the NHL gets you suspended 3-5 games, even upwards of 10 or higher for repeat offenders. they are putting these rules in place because the dangers of concussions has been brought to the forefront and parents don't want their kids playing a sport where they can get 5 concussions before the age of 15. that's my thoughts on the penalties about hitting the QBs head. |

They were having this discussion on the NFL network, and the reason why players get concussions/injured is because not enough focus is placed on the tackling mechanics when they are children. Do you think children who grew up in the 70's or 80's were deterred from playing Football by their parents? I understand the concussion aspect and attempting to keep the game safe, but in general games like hockey/football are contact sports. These parents know what their children are getting into when they bring them into the sport. In actuality, there is no sport out there where you don't take risks. I feel like if they are going to have this system in place, they have to include challenges on penalty calls because I feel like there a too many calls in the NFL that end up giving the opposite team the advantage. I've seen too many times wide receivers look at referees for a interference call, and then magically one gets thrown onto the field. |

They really have gone too far. There should be some offensive pass interference to go with the defensive pass interference. Ndamukong Suh has also been heavily involved in the defensive bulls*** and at times I think they overdo it too much. Suh can be a dumbass but he is getting fined for legal hits. |

I like that they are trying to promote player safety, but Roger Goodell couldn't care less about player safety. I don't know if you guys have seen it, but he would like to expand thursday nights to be double headers. And as you all know, thursday night games are very bad for the health of NFL players due to not having enough time to heal. Basically, Roger Goodell doesn't care, its all show. I bet its because of the lawsuits. Just make every NFL draftee sign a contract that states "you may not sue the NFL for any injuries in the future." Something along that. |
