Novacane for the pain

I wasn't going to bother with this because I figured it would be sorted quickly enough, but the worlds most powerful country is now under three days away from defaulting on its debts. That is insane.

Personally I'd be very surprised if this isn't sorted out within the next 24 hours but I still find it ridiculous that a political party would threaten this just to get what they want.

Considering the party in question is the Republican Party, perhaps we should be less surprised.....

Republican Congress members for New Jersey were against funding for disaster relief.....right up.until THEY needed it. Frankly, if Republicans needed healthcare coverage in the same way Obamacare was intending to give it, less voices would have spoken up.

So can someone explain this to me? On the new they're talking about it like it's some kind of regular thing, but I've never heard of a Government Shutdown before, what's happening over there? What are they trying to achieve?

No

This is all I got when I asked on another forum

Quote:

Basically all federal employees or people with federal contracts (those working for or with the government) are not currently working. But it is a partial shutdown so some are working though I'm not absolutely sure who is and isn't.

Basically by October 15? America has to pass a budget or they will default on loans which will piss off the world.

????????

Profit
by profit I mean children in the whitehouse that has been a growing problem for years for both sides.

A prolonged shutdown can have major disasterous effects on our economy which is already weakened and if it fails again there will be s*** all the Federal Reserve can do so 'save us' from a depression considering unemployment and inflation are already looking grim as is.
still don't get it tho

As I understand it, this happened in the US (keep in mind, I'm a Canuck and my information may not be perfectly accurate) once before in the 70's for about 21 days.

In this case, the Republicans despised the Affordable Care Act, which most know best as Obamacare. However, since they don't own the White House, they can't just erase it. So, they add it into other government bills to try to sneak it. In the case that caused the shutdown, they added it as an addendum to the bill regarding the debt ceiling. Because the House belongs to the Republicans, they can pass this bill onto the Senate, but this is where it gets bogged down. Most intelligent Presidents, of which Obama is one, appoint Senators that work for their party, which means any bill that the House sends up they can slap down at will and basically say "Write it better next time".

However, the Republicans refused to write out the part about Obamacare and so voted to.shut down the House, which means zero bills get sent, which grinds government down to a halt. Because the bill originally was about raising the debt ceiling which would allow for money to be spent on costs outside the country (international holdings and borrowed.money), without a new resolution the US will default on their current debt. Which means in general that their economy drops out from under them, which affects it drops the floor out from under the New York Stock.Exhange....which could theorectically bankrupt everyone else on Earth.

Basically, the Republicans.thought theynhad Obama beat: either you defund your pet project or we take America out and blame it on you. Obama got around that by requesting help from the groups that both parties arguably answer to in the US: the banks. The debt ceiling is paid.by them, and obviously they don't like.defaulting. So the banks slammed.down on Republicans to pass the debt ceiling seperately.

After.that, I lose information. If anyone else can add,.go ahead.
