Basically this is a survival horror manga set mainly in Japan so far (142 chapters in) in which most of the population becomes infected with some sort of disease that causes them to become what many would call "zombies". Basically they go around biting people which in turns infects more people. The infected are stronger than normal people, and possibly faster at running but I'm not too sure. However most of them are not very adept at fighting.
The manga starts by following a character called Suzuki Hideo (Hideo which has the same kanji as "hero") who is an assistant mangaka in his 30s. His life consists of him going to work where he doesn't get on too well with his work colleagues but still sometimes hangs out with them, seeing his girlfriend who he doesn't have a perfect relationship with, and being shut in his apartment where he often has hallucinations for some reason. As a result the first 15 chapters are quite slow since they just detail his arguably mundane life which is filled with generally dislikeable characters. However after 15 chapters the infection has really begun to spread so the pace picks up and doesn't really slow down.
This is a realistic series in that instead of fighting like you'd see in many other fictional stories, humans are forced to run and hide to survive as they are not only physically weaker than the zombies, but they are mostly limited to using weapons such as knives to fight. The series focuses on where humans go and how they organise themselves in order to survive, and how power is determined and how it shifts as a new post-infection world is ushered in. For example many of the survivors are people who were formerly unpopular shut-ins, since this allowed them to stay away from the infected. The main character was formerly a bit of a shut-in who was always imagining that he could be a hero, but at the same time occasionally complained that even in his own life he didn't seem to be the main character. During this dilemma has he finally risen to become a hero? That's more up to the reader to decide.
Similar to how Attack on Titan makes both the characters and the reader question the origins of the Titans, as well as what the relationship between the Titans and humans is, this series raises questions about the origins and nature of the "zombies" and how society is going to move forward after the infection. Will humanity continue? Will being a zombie become the new norm? Or will the zombies all just kill each other making humans fully extinct? Was this infection man-made?
The story occasionally goes into a dual narrative focusing on random people elsewhere in Japan. Sometimes the focused-on characters will survive, but sometimes they won't. Whether any of the characters featured in different narratives will meet up I'm not sure. For sure though this series doesn't skimp on character development and it does a good job of allowing the reader to grasp the scale of the infection and the terror that's been born from it.
One problem I do have with the series is that the characters sometimes seem more uncooperative and selfish than I'd imagine people would actually be. Another thing is that I find a lot of people underreact to things they see. Other readers say that the author is just realistically portraying how complacent people have become, but I think it goes too far sometimes.

In conclusion I definitely recommend this series if you're a fan of the survival genre, or have enjoyed series likes The Walking Dead and 28 Days Later. I also recommend it if you liked Attack on Titan since it shares some elements with it. It can be genuinely a bit scary even though it's a manga (if it was an anime it would definitely be scary) so be aware of that if you're getting into it. If you get annoyed by certain characters getting protected then know that with this series anyone can die - I wouldn't be surprised if the main character even got killed. I myself am not that into horror but have still enjoyed this manga a lot and by now (140 chapters in) I feel the author has done a really good job of building up a world and pulling me in. Also remember that while in the first 15 chapters it might seem like nothing interesting is happening after that it drastically changes from being more of a slice of life into being a full-on survival horror manga.
Give it a go if you think there's a chance you'll enjoy it.

edit: Nominated for the 3rd and 4th Manga Taisho Award (2010 and 2011) and winner of the 58th Shogakukan Manga Award (2013) in the General manga category.

Sorry? Would you spam this if it wasn't me? Don't spam.

Yeh it starts out a little "wtf" to say the least. I was really confused but basically the main character hallucinates and is just generally does very weird things at the start of the manga (like talking to himself/his imaginary friend, and dancing). You would never guess that it's a survival horror from the start.
