I think some time ago you would get a death sentence or very long prison sentence "which I find is ridiculous" Not sure about now though. Maybe its less harsh then before but it depends which army you joined. I don't think you should get any sentence for refusing to fight or serve when joining the army.

I think your thinking of conscription right? That's mandatory military service that someone must do otherwise, they go to jail. It's practiced in some countries but thank god it's not here. Personally, I would rather die then have to join the army. Theres no way I would fight for someone elses cause. |

You don't have to fight on the front lines in the armed services though. You can work in logistics or administration. If my country became under threat of invasion, I'd want to do everything I could to help out except fight. |

Most people think its you go out onto the battlefield killing people. Well no. I know I wouldn't be allowed. If I lost my glasses I wouldn't be able to see. I would be a liability. I would be an awful fighter, if anyone put me on the battlefield they might as well murder me. |

I think conscripts are solely for the front lines though. If you're joining the military on your own you get educated in the field of your choice, with conscripts its just for fighting there's no real processing I believe pretty much take a gun have a uniform get out there and kill or go to jail. It's probably a lot of time, well any time for doing nothing is a lot but I'd guess 10-20 years for being a coward in the eyes of that system. |

Depends. If it's something like my country getting attacked by another one, then I would probably join in a non-combat role that doesn't involve getting on the field. If it's something like fighting another countires war or my country starting a war with another one, then their absoutely no way I would join. I would rather go to jail or even die then have to that. |

My father had to do military because it was a mandate in Spain when he was younger. Most of the time it is basically heavy-physical training, discipline, and sometimes you do get called into battle. The punishment is probably severe if you don't do it, and it is required. It depends on the country though. |

What brought on this question out of interest? Just curiosity? I know that in the UK for people living in Britain itself during WWI or maybe WW2 I think it was if they declared themselves as Conscientious Objectors they'd sometimes be told they'd be killed but then wouldn't be. If you refused to do other things to help the war effort (like working on farms) you could be imprisoned. How long the imprisonments were I'm not sure....not more than 10 years. In South Korea these days you can go to prison for refusing the draft but not sure how long for. In Israel if you're not an Arab or in other certain groups I think you go to prison for like a month each time you refuse. If you go AWOL in the US army you can end up in prison for like a year. Like if you go on duty in somewhere that's been invaded and then refuse to return. Not sure what goes on elsewhere in places with conscription/a draft. If you mean the US Selective Service system today then you can't get forced to join the army atm since there's no conscription going off. All they can do is pester the fu** out of you by calling you up all the time and coming to see you. edit: really I should say military not "army" Edited by TrunksinSwimmingTrunks, Oct 4 2013, 11:57 PM.

Yeh actually my vision sucks. Still there are ways around that if they're desperate. These days guess they'd just put you in a room with Xbox controllers and let you drone a few houses. |

I'm not quite sure, but I would never serve in the military, and I wouldn't want any of my loved ones to either. America is always fighting over something stupid, and I don't want to get involved in that. |

I'll try to respond to more of these later when I can. But,
Just had a little off-topic discussion about it in class today. I thought it was interesting and something I've always wondered so I came to you all about it like I do everything else. |

In some countries, after you''ve graduated from college, you have to do 20 days of compulsory army training, so that you can fight if the country ever needs you. And yeah, I don't think the penalties of refusing conscription are as harsh now as they were in the world wars. |
