Do people feel sad and then cry or do they cry and then feel sad? Or is it different from person to person? Just noticed that I don't really feel sad then "What? Why am I crying?" and then sadness hits me, only after realizing. Not sure if that's normal or what. Sometimes just don't feel sad either there's no emotional response only physical. Feels kind of a waste. |

Crying for me is extremely therapeutic and its something I actually enjoy to do. I know this is conventionally weird to say, but I LOVE to cry. It feels extremely liberating and whenever I feel like crying I just allow myself to let it all out, even if its over something that no one else would cry for. I don't think it's a sign of weakness, I think it's a sign of strength. It means you're addressing your feelings and emotions and coming to terms with them instead of neglecting them or trying to cover them up with masks and artifacts. I've been crying more in the past 2-3 days than I have in like a year, and it's been exhausting, but also very soothing and healthy for me. The old cliche that crying cleanses the soul is ridiculously accurate for me personally. |

Whenever i have cried it has only been from emotional pain, and i rarely cry to be honest. The last time i did was at least 10 months ago. |

I usually don't like crying, but when I do, it makes me feel so much better. For me I'm almost immune to crying from something physical, it has to be something that touches me emotionally or mentally. Edited by Goddess Ultimecia, Sep 24 2013, 10:04 PM.

Yeah if it's some kind of major emotional thing crying is awesome it's like the best kind of closure on a situation. If anything bad happens in my life I tend to over exaggerate it in my mind to try force a cry there(because that sounds normal) It's weird how just some water coming out your eyes seems to fix things. I'm meaning more watching a sad movie or something and tears just come out it's really strange not feeling anything to go with it sort of like you're insane In normal situations it takes a hell of a lot of emotional pain to make it happen for me but for a movie or whatever, even if I'm not really enjoying it it still just kind of happens Off the point but for other animals that cry I wonder if it gives that same kind of relief, hope so. |

I don't really like the idea of crying at first either, but when i do cry i generally feel better. When i was a little younger i used to keep my emotions bottled up and rarely talked to anyone about any problems, but i do recall when i did cry i would feel better in a way i can't really explain. |

I've found ... I cry a lot in anger, frustration or guilt. Sadness for me doesn't always manifest itself as that; it manifests itself as some combination of the aforementioned. The last time I cried because I was sad was probably at my grandma's funeral last year. I've cried plenty since then, but not with the same motivation behind it. I'm also one of those girls that gets very teary when her hormones decide to kick it up a notch - anything will set me off. I don't consider that to be through anger or sadness or anything, just that my body's prompting a reaction to those homeless puppies on the TV. Other than certain *ahem* times of the month, however, I tend not to react to things like movies. I guess I'm desensitized there, though, because I studied media and film for so long, and I tend to over-analyze things like that now. Ironically, I have been so happy that I've cried before. And I'm not talking a few tears, here. I'm talking puffy, red face, struggling for breath, the works. Because I was happy. I don't have an issue with crying. It's a natural, human response to external and internal stimuli. It's a release, it's exhausting, and I tend to feel emotionally drained afterward, (minds out of the gutter, please) especially if I've been really worked up beforehand. I've grown up with a father who can't cry and a brother who tends to refuse to, and witnessing that is more difficult than watching a grown man cry - they lose themselves to anger and it can, frankly, be frightening. Because they consider crying a sign of weakness. |

Lately, it makes me really hate myself. For a normal good person, I completely agree with Strawberry's sentiment, but for me, I can't help but see the uselessness in it. It won't make my life any better. It won't make the people who don't care about me suddenly care, and the people who DO care about me tend to ignore anything I do that doesn't benefit them. So in the end, I'll be crying alone. When I finish crying, I'll look puffy and red, so I won't want to go out. I'll have a headache, so I won't want to leave my apartment. Regardless of all this I can't help it, which is in itself even more frustrating. |

There are many things that can cause crying, being sad is one, but there there is also being happy, something in your eye I suppose can cause it, pain (which is different to sadness), seeing something you like (similar to joy I suppose) and probably so many more. I don't think there is anything wrong with crying, some people like to every so often, it can relive stress or it can just make you feel good, dunno, sure there's some psychological thing to it. |

I've always wondered about the body's reasons for crying: how it's explained, why it helps etc. But apparently not enough to find out by this point in my life. As for me, I am neither ashamed of, nor do I enjoy, crying. It's just something I have very little control over (there is occasionally a point where you can "give in" and cry, or "fight it off"), something necessary. I don't cry very regularly, but it's not an uncommon thing. It happens enough that I couldn't tell you how many times it's happened in the past year/two years, but it's not a weekly, or even monthly thing. It just happens when it happens. Sometimes it's a heavy 'session', sometimes it last for only a few minutes. It's definitely something that I would advise people not to 'fight off', because our body has many natural reactions and there's always a healthy reason behind them. You wouldn't hold in bowel movements or breaths, so don't hold in your tears. Let it all out and you'll feel a big relief afterwards (as long as you don't force yourself to feel ashamed because of social stigma that deems crying to be weak, which it's not). |

I feel sad and then cry. I'd say I well up quite easily but I don't full cry much. To me it's okay to cry, but it's annoying if people just do it to get attention. I try to not cry in front of anyone because then people might think I'm trying to get attention when I'm not. edit: I'm guessing that crying probably exists to signal pain to others, since that's how babies signal distress before they can talk. I don't know for sure though it's something I've wondered about too. Edited by daman, Sep 25 2013, 10:43 AM.

Are you sure that's caring, though? I'm not sure why you don't see yourself as a "normal good person", Smochi. I see you depreciating yourself a lot over the forum and it always breaks my heart when I see it because I see so much greatness in you and it seems you're constantly putting yourself down and overlooking all your good qualities. That probably has to do with your past experiences and the people you've met in your life, but I'd love to help you see the things you can't see about yourself and really own them. As for crying, I don't think anyone looks particularly good after crying. I also get the headaches you mention and they can be really annoying, but I still don't understand what is it about crying that leaves people so frustrated and ashamed. That must have to do with that negative stigma associated with crying that tells you you're a weak person, which is why I made my first post saying I don't buy that meaning at all. When you're sincere with your emotions and take time to address them and being open about them you're being courageous -- it's not easy admitting to yourself that you're not feeling right about something, it can be overwhelming just accepting you're not okay. And crying can also be a good platform for you to clear your mind a bit and have a better disposition to come up with practical solutions for your problems. It's all about how you choose to look at it at the end of the day. Hit me up with a PM if you want to have a more personal conversation and open up about your life or something. I'd gladly listen to you, chicka
