I've read the likes of Bleach for years and over 250 chapters of Fairy Tail, putting up with something like this isn't difficult.

I actually enjoy it. It may not be for everyone, though. I don't think the story is really s***ty. |

Says the guy who likes SAO. I don't agree with the personality swap thing. Him being clueless fair enough that's inconsistent but there's nothing inconsistent about his personality. He might just not get along with his parents. Also as far as him being sociable going against the hikki thing I don't think that's true since once he's on the island he has to interact with the other people there. Maybe he doesn't go out much normally but when he does actually go out he's reasonably sociable. If Bex sent me to Btooom! then my flashbacks might make me look like a di**....some people are just not very nice in certain situations. Ryouta's bad side is the only one that is shown in the flashbacks, but the good side he has on the island could always be there imo. What's TTK? |

Awww, someone went there. I'm not really saying he can't have good aspects to his personality, but the contrast is just too great. There is hardly a trace of his flashback self on the island, which shouldn't be the case. We wouldn't have known of that side of his personality at any point in the story at all if it weren't for the flashbacks, which is a flaw in characterization because, well, it's a trait of his personality and it ought to surface at some point. It's also the whole reason he got sent to the island. Surely something like that should get more focus in terms of development, etc? The Third Kira (wasn't saying it's a bad name btw, @OFG). If it's a trait that should arise when should it have arised then? |

It should have, at the very least, been hinted at every time he interacted with others. Of course he'd interact with them eventually, he has no choice, but we'd get that anti-social vibe, which he completely lacked in the actual product. He could've also acted the part at times where he would've been legitimately angry ( Instead he's an a** in one part and a saint in another. The contrast is too great and there's no good reason given for it. Edited by Kyouks, Sep 25 2013, 01:15 AM.

Yeah, the story here is much more consistent than that of SAO if we're going to compare it to that. I also like this a lot more than Cage of Eden, which I've been reading recently and has a similar premise. |

I love survival manga but I hate flashbacks. I happened to read flashbacks as I was scrolling down. Are there a lot those in this one? |

There are quite a few, but they're actually really interesting. I enjoyed them just as much as the story itself despite the characterization of Ryouta at times like we mentioned. |

Btooom is by far my favorite manga and I see you folks badmouthing my boy Ryota here... There was no inconsistency with him being cluess; it was based on an actual game he was familiar with, sure, but to think all the bombs must work like they do in that online game is an assumption on your part, isn't it? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wJbfnIkOAWs/ULM90Bya5BI/AAAAAAAAB70/Afm2tUO6HMw/023.png?imgmax=2000 I find him believable. In fact, he reminds me of my cousin. Some people just don't have good relationships with their parents, but they don't necessarily act the same around other people (classmates, for instance, in Ryota's case). As shown in the flashback he was in full obsession mode with playing the game, so naturally he would freak out when people try to stop him.
I don't know you but Iike you already.
What do you have against my favorite character of all time? I don't like you. Edited by only4anime, Sep 25 2013, 07:25 AM.

No. Why would it be hinted at every time he interacted with others though? In the flashbacks when it showed him interacting with anyone other than his parents he was actually quite nice, but then obv he got betrayed by his friend so he started just staying inside/online more. But online he was quite sociable so it makes sense that when actually forced into a situation where he can't go online (on the island) he'll be quite sociable. So it's actually going from an "a**" to being nice at all because he was never shown as an "a**" in the flashback. |

When forcing a hikki into a death game, it makes sense he'd be instantly and perfectly sociable of all things...? A death game is kind of different from sucking up to a big shot from a game company (you've yet to bring this up but it would've eventually gotten mentioned). He was sociable in school but then he became a shut-in for years, his interactions with his peers don't hold any water. There's literally no reason for him to respect the others on that island, let alone act altruistic like some sort of hero (most people who aren't a**es wouldn't do such a thing so quickly and willingly). His flashbacks showed that he was concerned only with himself. It's an inconsistency in his personality. It's unrealistic. "But online he was quite sociable..." Yeah, that totally means he'll be sociable when he "needs" to be. Let's see what Steve thinks about this. Last post on this matter, clearly going nowhere. You win, shut-ins can realistically immediately become respected altruists when thrown into death games. I'll be reading chapter 60 sometime this week.

The latest chapter was quite sad. I hate Date. It makes me feel better that his name is ridiculous. |
