A really good survival manga. Reminds me a lot of Battle Royale and Sword Art Online mixed together. Has anyone else read it?

Where do you read it at? The site I'm on has unbearably terrible translations. I don't know if they're all like that, though.

I've seen the anime. It was good I thought but I've heard from fatdinosaur/only4anime that there's some plot armour and stuff in the manga....

I think it's better than SAO since they actually have to physically do things rather than just easily levelling up to make themselves able to do superhuman things. The characters are better developed than in SAO I'd say too; like there's that boy villain who's quite developed. The combat system is good too since the characters are always trying to figure out which bombs the other characters have, and how they can use their bombs to combat against those bombs.

I hope the anime gets a second season, but if not I guess eventually the manga will have to be read.

Yeah, what I've read so far has been interesting. I'm hoping to catch up to the manga tonight, but the translations are god-awful. I own the first three volumes. I just can't wait that long for them to be released.

I read it on places like mangahere, it was tolerable enough on there from what I can remember of the earlier chapters. Not sure if sites like that are the ones that annoy you...

I find it a little strange that apparently the main character is 22 and the girl is 15.

Yeh that's a kinda big gap at that age....still 15 isn't that young....I suppose.

I'm starting chapter 35, so yeah, it probably could be.

I'm almost caught up now. What a ride. It's really enjoyable. ^_^ The main flaw I see is with the characterization of Ryouta. Some of his character traits seem to contradict each other. But other than that, it's great!

Ryouta's personality seems to completely change at times for no real reason, and the huge contrast between his flashback self and his current self is tough to swallow, yeah. I also thought he was inexplicably dumb earlier on, how did he not figure out the timer bomb the first three times when he was an expert player online? Meh. I don't really like Himiko's backstory either. Her friends hate her for getting the cops instead of staying behind to get raped? (as far as I recall). Date was a cliched "absolute evil, foil to the main character" type villain, so meh.

Not trying to be a killjoy, just realized it looked like that. Psychological aspects in the manga are good enough. Taira-san, poor guy...I eat ramen after two minutes now.

Off-topic, how would you compare this to BR?

It's been a while, and I don't even think I finished it, so I'd have to read Battle Royale again.

It wasn't really Himiko's backstory that I disliked as much as her character itself. She was really only a typical damsel in distress up until a certain point. And yes, Ryouka's major personality switches were what I was referring to. That and the fact that although he was supposed to be world ranked and incredibly smart, he acted completely dumb at some very crucial moments.

I don't get what anyone means when they say his personality changes (Ryouta). In his flashback he wasn't shown to be mean to everyone was he? He was just not very nice to certain people, but that doesn't mean he's going to be like with everyone/be a generally bad person.

Also as far as not figuring out the bombs goes did he actually know it was all based on the video game at that point or no?

It's strange to see him freaking out like a psycho maniac on his mom and step-father and showing absolutely no signs of that behavior in the present. He doesn't show any real anger at all, actually, even when Himiko is in danger. It's strange that the writer chose to show him behaving that way in flashbacks when he had no intention of seeing that through in the actual story.

Also, I was peeved that he acted so dumb on so many occasions. An example would be him instantly trusting Dr. Date and taking the case with the bomb in it so easily right after Himiko expressed her concerns about Dr. Date to him. That among several other instances contradicted his status as "world champion" and "genius" that he was given prior to the game.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure he knew right away that the game was based on the actual video game. He figured that out rather quickly. It made me confused as to why he didn't understand how a lot of the bombs worked and how to locate chips and such using the radar. If it was based on the game, wouldn't he know that? Maybe not. Who knows.

I think the author should have written his character a little differently, that's all. I think his character in the flashbacks is interesting. It would have made me happier if he was a little more angry and sullen throughout the entire story, but instead he seems to have this other persona that acts goofy and clueless at times.

The character in the flashbacks is a flawed, uncaring one that would've been great for this kind of series. The one we see in the "game" is cliched and holds the idiot ball too often. Him being something of an a** in the "game" could have also given Himiko the potential to be more than just his complementary woman. He could learn to care because of her (and maybe Taira), but there's no need for that because personality-swap. For example, the Ryouta in the flashbacks likely would've found Taira annoying as hell, initially at least, but that isn't what happens. He acts as sociable and polite as can be (which is also a contradiction to him living the hikki life in general).

As for the bombs, maybe trying once or twice with the timers would've been understandable, but it took him like, what, five times? Not to mention sometimes he's incredibly naive (whole business with Date, Himiko voices her concerns, Date basically alludes to his own villainy by going "do you trust me" over carrying a suitcase...), but then other times he comes up with fairly impressive strategies under incredible pressure to avoid carrying Himiko up the ladder to that tree house thingy (when the lizard things were chasing them or something).

The author was probably trying to have him represent reclusive people because of the premise for the story, and at the same time tried to make him likable by having him be nice whenever the time called for it, while making him smart to reinforce his "genius" in some scenes and making him dumb to force other events to occur in other scenes. All that together just doesn't work. The author should've picked one route and stuck to it.

tl;dr: I agree with what OFG said (TTK? no).
