Well like I said it depends on who you are. Yes family generally always stick with you, but they're with you at a much lower level, while friends are with you at a higher level if you know what I mean. Friends are the ones to talk to and do things with. Family are just there to "be family" and do nothing really. Also like I said family *generally* stick with you, but a lot of the time only if you're willing to be what they want you to be. Friends will like you once they know who you are, but family can often turn away once they really get to know you, and then if your family drifts away then they're hardly going to be capable of helping you through life like a friend can; I mean you can't expect great advice from someone who barely knows who you really are deep down. Anyway surely we are talking about "best friends" here anyway, since we're on about "true friends". |

It’s like, you’ve got the whole world and Earth and all its holy creations, right? And God is like, Hmm, lookit, my whole world in all its holy ways, and he’s like, Oh-my-me-oh-sh**, I left weed in here. Yeah right, I left weed in here. I'd just like to point out that family doesn't always stick with you. That generally only happens if you have a close-knit family. |

A true friend is a friend that never abandons you, invites you into everything, helps you through tough times, never talks behind your back, and most of all, they accept you just the way you are. That's my definition

I do plenty with my family, and I can't even begin to explain all the fun I've had in my family in every trip I've had with them. So I guess you're right about the rest, it depends on who you are and also a lot on the kind of family you get. A true friend for me in particular is one that makes sure I'm not left behind

^Fair nuf. I'd like to point out that Raditz was Goku's brother. That's one example of family not sticking with each other once a certain line is crossed. Don't think it's hard to think of others (princes killing each other for a thrown, disowning family for being gay, for marrying the wrong people etc). Really if you're gonna be technical about it friends are friends by definition (duh) whereas family are only sometimes friends. If someone in your family treats you really badly they are still your family, but if someone who was your friend does something really bad then they aren't your friend any more, so therefore friends are those who treat you the best. If you're strongly bonded with your family then I'd say they are your friends. So the dictionary wins.... |

If I can share a conversation with someone that consists of nothing but insults and neither of us are offended, then I know we're friends. |

Someone who you can truthfully say you can trust and won't turn your back on you for their own personal gain. I haven't had that in a long time. Edited by Yusuke, Sep 14 2013, 05:39 AM.

Someone cares about YOU, with a sense of justice. If someone truly cares about you, they'll always have your best interest at heart. If they have a good sense of justice, they'll exercise their care for you in a way that can allow you both to grow in virtue together, inspiring each other to be better people. |

I feel like true friends should drop the 'unecessaries' that they are doing to come and help you when you are in need -- desperate need for an important situation. |

The hobbies and interests thing is a big thing. They aren't your friend if they make fun of you (in a non-joking way) for your hobbies. My cousin and I do weird things that any of our friends would make fun of us for. They are still my friends, but not best friends. Its more of my definition of a best friend. You don't need to be a true friend to be a friend in my opinion. But there is a difference with a best friend to a regular friend. |
