My laptop is being weird.

When I click the start button to access my programs and try to select anything (paint, photoshop, etc.) nothing happens. It doesn't even register that I clicked on the program. All it does is make a weird "ding" sound. What does this mean? My laptop is all kinds of screwy already. Sometimes it won't pull up my browser unless I restart my computer, and it never shuts down, so I always end up having to manually shut the laptop down which isn't good for it at all.

Any suggestions?

How old is it? Scan for viruses and the like?

I would save all important s*** -- music, assignments, notes, whatever -- and reformat.

After doing what KP suggested

I don't think it's that old. It's a Gateway "N214," whatever that means. It's a really big laptop, and seems nice to me - a lot nicer than my last one. I have McAfee Total Protection, but I don't know if that's expired. I don't think it has, but I'll have to check. If it is expired, how would you guys recommend scanning for viruses?

And I don't know how to reformat. I have no knowledge with computers whatsoever.

Well if your start button doesn't work it might be hard to reformat.

Windows 7. My start button works, it just won't let me click on any programs for whatever reason. It's incredibly frustrating.

Sounds like a registry error. Let me go find you a tutorial on how to edit the registry and check if thats the problem...

Edit: Is this similar to your problem?

It hurts my head reading that stuff and trying to decipher it, but that sounds kind of like my problem.

Take it to any PC shop to fix it. I always do that to minimize the death of my cell brains
