When I click the start button to access my programs and try to select anything (paint, photoshop, etc.) nothing happens. It doesn't even register that I clicked on the program. All it does is make a weird "ding" sound. What does this mean? My laptop is all kinds of screwy already. Sometimes it won't pull up my browser unless I restart my computer, and it never shuts down, so I always end up having to manually shut the laptop down which isn't good for it at all. Any suggestions? |

I would save all important s*** -- music, assignments, notes, whatever -- and reformat. After doing what KP suggested Edited by Buuberries, Sep 10 2013, 11:35 PM.

I don't think it's that old. It's a Gateway "N214," whatever that means. It's a really big laptop, and seems nice to me - a lot nicer than my last one. I have McAfee Total Protection, but I don't know if that's expired. I don't think it has, but I'll have to check. If it is expired, how would you guys recommend scanning for viruses? And I don't know how to reformat. I have no knowledge with computers whatsoever. |

Well if your start button doesn't work it might be hard to reformat. |

Windows 7. My start button works, it just won't let me click on any programs for whatever reason. It's incredibly frustrating. |

Sounds like a registry error. Let me go find you a tutorial on how to edit the registry and check if thats the problem... Edit: Is this similar to your problem? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/172223 Edited by Accelerator, Sep 10 2013, 11:48 PM.

It hurts my head reading that stuff and trying to decipher it, but that sounds kind of like my problem. |

Take it to any PC shop to fix it. I always do that to minimize the death of my cell brains |
