do you guys practice any martial arts? I've tried some but after a while I started realising that even though my fitness has gone up, I can't feel much of a differencr in my ability to fight. So far I've done taekwondo (7th kup green tag) and karate (2nd dan, yellow). There aren't many good martial arts classes here in Manchester anyway, as far as I know. |

I watched some Bruce lee tutorials on Youtube and learned a few things from those. Next year or the year after I hope to take up boxing. More for exercise and fitness rather than competition. |

I was thinking of taking a martial art, as there are a lot of places down this way (Not to far from Manchester myself). Not sure what I'd want to do to be honest, as It'd be more for staying fit/having something to do hah. |

I might take up a martial art to develop some flexibility and endurance, but I really don't like the potentially violent side of it to be honest. |

I've considered teaching myself a few times aswell, but there's only so much you can do by yourself. I had a friend to do it with, so that made it slightly easier, but the lack of a teacher was apparent. Sometimes, we just didn't know what to do next. |

It all depends on what kind of person you are to be honest. Its like a rule of martial arts, not to use what you've learned in an aggressive manner and only for self defense. Or are you referring to what might happen in the dojo? SpeedoTrunks, where abouts are you? |

![]() I'm just a piece of trash.. but there are things I learned. The hole in your heart is something other people can fill. If you reject your friends' feelings and this world.. Just because something didn't go as you wished, no one will ever come to you. And so that hole won't be filled either, if you just run away without doing anything people won't do anything for you either.. As long as you don't give up, you can still be saved | |

Actually violence was probably a dumb word to use. Fighting's a better one But yeah, dojo inclusive. Edited by Crashbreaka, Sep 7 2013, 12:03 PM.

I don't think you should let that stop you start a martial art. Your teacher likely won't even let you have proper full contact sparring without full safety gear, and even that'll be after you're more experienced. So basically, they won't let you get hurt

I'm from Crewe, Cheshire, so a brief drive or train journey away. I used to do Karate as a kid, and made it to red belt (which was two belts into the training I think) but had physically lost my License, and could not afford to replace it, so dropped out. I've love to give something a go, possibly Ju-jitsu or BJJ. |

Yeah, I've heard that BJJ, krav maga, aikido and muay Thai are the best ones to do. But I can't find any decent classes. Edit: mma is also very good Edited by Kienzan, Sep 7 2013, 12:48 PM.

my general opinion on martial arts is that you become a better fighter based whatever "rules" you're taught to fight with. if you're getting better at taekwando, then you'll get better at taekwando competitions, etc. street fights don't have rules. if you're actually learning to defend yourself in a real fight, then knowing a martial art doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be able to pull off all the moves you've learned in a street fight... like taekwando and their fancy kicks. i'm not at all saying that martial arts are pointless, but more that a lot of it doesnt transcribe fluidly into a street fight -- they have limits. even the oh-so-popular MMA has its limits. i've got friends who go on about how they'll get someone in a grapple. really? a grapple? in a street fight? I would kick my assailant's nuts or thrust my thumbs in their eyes and get the f*** out of there or continue to hit them while they're reeling from their smashed-in nuts or eyes. there some that are more practical than others so it's best to find out which ones. they focus on taking down your assailant fast rather than naffing around with the fancier stuff which are great for competitions, but almost pointless in a street fight. MMA is something I've fancied for a long time, I might give it a bash and see what it's like hah. EDIT: Buu, You are very right about the above post. Many times I seen Martial artists both succeed and fail stupendously in "real fights", it just depends on the circmstances and who they're fighting. I once witnissed my own father KO an alleged "Black belt" in something or other, all because he'd turned his back on my dad during a fight.....she he punched him the back of the head, knocking him clean out. He left him in the street to return inside to the pud and finish his drink. The chap in question was ok, but was being a bit mouthy about his martial art "pedigree".
