I feel that I've heavily neglected my musical side for too long so I've decided to start practicing again. I've been playing on and off for probably 9 years now, but I was self-taught so I've developed a s***load of bad techniques and habits (protip: get lessons). I'm too cheap for formal lessons, though; I kind of just ask people stuff every now and again and they give me a bunch o' handy tips. I'm not necessarily looking for songs, although feel free to talk about stuff you're learning if you want and how you're breezing through it cuz you're a badass, or still trying to learn it cuz you're just as badass and persistent. I'm basically going over basics to build a more solid foundation. I prefer fingerstyle so I've been going through this: http://www.stormthecastle.com/classical_guitar/Collection/120studies-for-right-hand.pdf I used to play the piano and had theory lessons so luckily I still remember how to read notes. Unfortunately, my sight reading for guitar is very poor, so I'm also working on that by not using tabs. Two birds w/ one stone tl;dr post exercises you still use/used when you first began to play. if you guys want to share any links or pdf files you've made/have (use puush to upload -- idk about any copyright s*** so be wary of that, i guess) then i can collate them on this post and we'll have a whole library of learninz thx xoxo eyeing u, crash. i know ur fingers are beast |

When I first began to play (I taught myself too) I would just play scales over and over again. Then I moved to just learning songs and picking up techniques from them. I started with Green Day songs and then I moved to Metallica. From there it was basically learning really fast soloing, mainly sweep picking. These days I play mostly Dragonforce because its so fast. I also play Classical stuff. I take a classical song and make it more metal and play off that. I also write my own music and that is very helpful when practicing. Practicing a song I usually just jump right into it and play it at full speed until I remember the notes, but back then I would play the song really slow and work my way up to speed. About a year ago, I think, I learned the song Flight of the Bumblebee. The original song is at 170 bpm and I decided to see how fast I could get it while still being clean because its a VERY GOOD song to practice to get good at soloing. It teaches you how to use your pinky finger really well. I eventually got up to 270 but I couldn't go any faster than that. Anyway, I hope I helped a little bit. I've been playing guitar for years (10 I think) and I have some videos on YouTube if you wanna check em out. |

Guitar is a different instrument for everyone that plays it, so while following a set of typical guidelines might get you a good push start, following them down to the letter mightn't be very constructive for you. I've seen guitarists play in all sorts of weird ways, such as using only two fingers for playing, or even using their feet because they don't have arms. For myself as a finger-style player, I found I couldn't use my fingernails like most people (I don't really have any), so I play with skin rather than nail. So your bad habits might not even be bad habits at all My exercises end to be around playing stuff by ear as I can't read music any more, so sometimes I just sit next to the radio and play along with whatever they're doing. It's a good way to learn how to improvise. Chords and scales are part of the ol' routine too, they really help with flexibility and hand strength. Even better if you have a twelve-string acoustic sitting around the house. Overall I just practice a lot as I also want some decent hand endurance. I'm afraid I don't have any PDF's though This is good though if you want some difficult chord manipulation stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhR04kmcSXU And this is good for practicing finger independency: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYzajpeAWuA Edited by Crashbreaka, Sep 6 2013, 11:35 PM.

@Aang I started on GD songs, too. I look back on them and think, I can't believe I ever thought BJA was really good at playing the guitar... hah. Cool I've never tried to learn Flight of the Bumblebee before. It'd probably take me a few weeks or even a month of practicing it slowly since I suck at playing that kind of stuff in general and suck at learning solos, but I'll try to get to it eventually -- thanks. I tend to play more classical stuff or fingerstyle versions of mainstream songs I like, or during a drunken night I'll just throw a few chords together and sing a Disney song while people laugh at me and join in. And sure I actually tried to stalk your channel earlier -- I remember you posted a video on the Post your Talent thread, but you only have one video up on that so I'm assuming you're talking about a different channel or they're all on private? @Crash I actually hated learning scales so much lol, but I always forced myself to do them. I pretty much just transfer a lot of my old piano knowledge (which isn't much) to guitar also high-five I hate using my nails, too. It just makes me feel unhygienic to have them long enough to play so I just use my skin. Thanks for the links. I'll check them out soon. Edited by Buuberries, Sep 6 2013, 11:38 PM.

Cool, will do. And lol Crash I just checked out those vids. I've been practicing quite a lot these past few days and was thinking, Cool, I'm better than I was a few months ago after only a few days of this, then I see people playing like that and it's both inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. |

I know what you mean The future's gonna be interesting for guitarists, considering there are 8 year-olds that can already play this kind of s**t. |

Novacane for the pain

This thread makes me feel extremely guilty. I haven't played for close to three years now. There was a bunch of reasons, I had no one to play with anymore, didn't have as much time to play, lost about 10 picks in as many days (seriously, they disappear. I moved out of that house last month and still didn't find any. Where do they go?!). I'm extremely out of practice, last time I played I was beyond rusty. It's not exactly like being a complete beginner again but it's frustrating. The worst part is I don't have the time to dedicate to picking it up again either with everything else going on. Also my fingers have become weak as s*** again. I used to be able to play for hours and not feel a thing, last time I did not very much for not very long and could feel it in my fingers for ages afterwards. |

hah yeah i remember buying a big handful quite a few times and losing them less than a week later... it's almost like socks disappearing when you put them in the washing machine. and yeah the hand endurance thing sucks. i injured my left hand punching someone last year (it was a predrink game) and I must've broken something cuz I could barely play for more than 10 minutes without being in pain for about 4-5 months. i guess the best thing to do if you want to get back into it but dont have time is to just play around while foruming or doing something during your down time. |

If you just keep on buying picks eventually you'll accumulate so much that it doesn't matter if you lose them all. They'll just magically appear when you need them. You can also get these 'guitar pick puncher' thingies that you can use to turn old credit cards and stuff into guitar picks. They're actually pretty good quality too, after a while of playing. |

If picks even touch the ground they teleport to an alternate dimension where all picks go when lost. |

You'll probably start wanting them if you're doing guitar solos and stuff, your fingers can only go so fast. |
