I think the problem is that you're not allowed to hold Back and A because it won't work. You have to quickly tap it without holding the buttons down just as they attack you. I guess they thought it was too easy in Budokai 3 so they made it WAAAAAY more difficult. Funnily enough I've also found that I get the most success from spamming which kind of sucks that it makes you resort to that.
