How close to your version of "in love" have you been? If you have been in love, what was/is it like? Do you have fireworks going off? Does your heart pound? What goes on in your mind?

I'm just curious :)

I was madly in love with my first and only girlfriend. Knew her since I was a kid. We were serious, and would have likely been marred early into the relationship had we been a tad older. My heart is still broken, and that was over 4 years ago.

True love? Nothing better than when you are in it. But nothing can be worse when things go awry, especially if the feelings are still there.

I would normally ask you to explain how you felt, but since you're still hurting over it, I won't. I fell madly in love with my girlfriend, and we've been through times of breakups and makeups, so I know how it feels to have the one you're in love with leave you. I was just lucky enough she was in love with me, too, and was just "being stupid," as she puts it. :p

Nope.

If it wasn't for one of the most rational people I know (Engineer) sharing his experiences with me I probably still wouldn't even believe in 'love' as anything more than a chemical reaction in the brain made to trick us.

However, I do hope to experience it one day.

How I felt? I felt complete, happy, fulfilled, and like I could take on anything.

I may have been in love once, and it was one of the worst periods of my life.

Then again, I have a hard time distinguishing "love" and "gratification" in general in this world.

And yes, I believe "love" is a trick nature plays on us to get us to reproduce.

True love is something beyond words honestly. It stays with you forever and and is just...it's so passionate, caring, and all engulfing.

That definitely isn't the case, Prince. It may be for some people, but for most it isn't.

I wouldn't be too sure. I obviously don't know but there is scientific sound theories out there.

What if one day we have a pill that makes you 'love' more or less? Same as depression, anxiety, nervousness, etc.

Like I said though, I'm hopeful it's real and is somehow connected with experience and bonding.

If it was a chemical reaction only, why would humans become fixated on one person instead of every beautiful one they see?

I speak from personal experience and the experience of others. I haven't really looked into the science side of things. I just know what I feel, I guess. Love is something that happens when I connect and bond with a person on an extreme level. You feel completely comfortable around that person, you're never embarrassed or ashamed. You feel something warm in your gut when you think of them, and you get goosebumps or feel a fantastic sensation when they touch you or say a certain thing. You have overwhelming feelings of protectiveness and happiness, but you feel very anxious and depressed when you think of something bad happening to them or the relationship. Without them, you feel like you would die, like you can't make it without them there, and you're incredibly lonely when they're away.

That's only a fragment of it.

I think OFG and I can both attest to it being real. When you finally do feel it, you'll know. I had completely given up on love before my current relationship because of all of the times I was screwed over in my past relationships. I wasn't even looking for someone, she just found me. And now it's the best feeling in the world just being around her. I'm not "in love with the thought of being in love" or any of that jazz. When you're in love, that person becomes a part of you, and when they're gone (not physically by your side at that moment), you feel like there's something missing from you, and it's them. It's so real that I couldn't ever explain it, but in one kiss, I could get the idea across at least.

Very well explained. It's clear you've been in love.

I have been in love. I've been with a girl who was my world. She knew me better than I knew me and I knew her better than she knew herself. I honestly believed that I would spend the rest of my life with her, and I was so happy about that. Being in love is a feeling that is impossible to explain. She was my other half, my "soul mate" of you will.

As Plato said
"According to Greek mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs, and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate beings, condemning them to spend their lives searching for their other half."

And I had found my other half.
