The hierarchy exists but serves more of a third role which I guess can be disappointing. I had the same issue when trying to read it since I started reading right after Naruto. I kept trying to invent one in my mind which made it sort of boring since the author only dabbed his brush there every several chapters. Eventually I gave that up for what it was meant to be; an adventure-discover new places-with fights fitting right in type manga. Everything like power and technique comes second to adventure although it was still well integrated. That in my opinion made it arguably the best manga of all time.

	I'm just a piece of trash.. but there are things I learned. The hole in your heart is something other people can fill. If you reject your friends' feelings and this world.. Just because something didn't go as you wished, no one will ever come to you. And so that hole won't be filled either, if you just run away without doing anything people won't do anything for you either.. As long as you don't give up, you can still be saved

There are many minor characters who get about as much development as the main character in other anime. There are characters from different walks of life, with different aims and ethics. Things aren't black and white. The only shonen I've seen that rivals OP in terms of plot complexity is FMAB, but then FMAB doesn't cover quite as many themes as One Piece does (themes I mentioned in my earlier post). The character designs are hardly lazy....they actually have more detail to them in some ways than a lot of other designs. And one thing that cannot be debated is that One Piece has more detail to the surroundings in each of its panels than the vast majority of other manga, especially other shonen manga. Obviously if you're looking for cool fights or don't appreciate a little political or social commentary you might not enjoy it too much. Of course I'm not seeing much actual criticism with substance in this topic, but then again members like FollowTheLeader and Syn are hardly known for that.

Maybe their personalities are good but not their designs. Nami's bust is just shameless, you can't do that to a main character in such a long series, 17-19 year olds with like Z cups is Fairy Tail level material. I really doubt more than 10% of it's fanbase like it for the themes and stuff, perhaps it is the best shounen manga ever in terms of story but it's fanbase isn't so big because of that, the 90% is probably just "wow lots of fighting best evur!" If you ask most fans of it they're not going to give you some spiel about how it changed their life or anything just that they like the action.

One Piece isn't shounen-like in that the main character don't have to win and they don't always win. If anything most shounen lovers would shun it for that. Also iirc that design is form the iceberg saga and that dude wasn't important at all but unlike other series there are so many characters all the designs won't be great. This thread has made me try it again, just got over 100 chapters in and I'm liking them much more now. It helps that the backgrounds are really nice and detailed too and some of the double page spreads are very impressive, especially for an early part of the series.
	We'll never be those kids again
