Everyone that I've seen who's talked about this event on facebook or any other site has basically trashed Miley, but hardly anyone has actually presented real arguments, and conceded to the other side of the argument. I personally support Miley Cyrus in what she did (not saying that I think it's appropriate, because it certainly wasn't). I'll elaborate on that more if this topic gets running. Here's the video if you don't know what I'm talking about: Spoiler: click to toggle

I have no real arguments here, but I am curious to know why you support her in what she did. For me, it didn't seem like one of those situations where you take any sides. For me, it was what it was; Entertainment. |

In today's society (at least in America), everyone is different, and in my eyes, that diversity is what makes us special. Lady Gaga used to be the diversity of the season, but then Miley had a boom and now she's the diversity of this season. The people who say that what she did was inappropriate and disgusting, I can agree with. But when they say that she's "supposed to be a role model for our kids," I have to stop them in their tracks and teach them a lesson. As Hannah Montana, she was a teen pop star. A TEEN pop star. She isn't a teenager anymore, she's an adult. She doesn't live with heartwarming daddy, Billy Ray Cyrus, anymore, she probably smokes pot and drinks more than the average (how old is she? I'll look it up) year old and she can still make music, regardless of whether she can actually sing or not. The message behind her original songs, not the songs that she has other people write for her image, is more than what most adults make it out to be. Her new hit "We Can't Stop" is basically saying that we're independent people and we can do whatever makes us happy. Why should that be a bad message to today's society, who are telling us that we can't do what we want because it's either not in our power (which anything that you want is in your power, you just have to achieve that power first), or that it goes against what they personally believe and that it's "wrong." Some people like the lovely ladytiness that Miley performed Sunday night. In their eyes, she did absolutely nothing wrong. It's the uptight people that have a problem with it. Again with the diversity, it's what makes us humans. All she's doing is being a human. |

Agreed with Emmeth. It was purely entertainment. Anyone who's butthurt over it needs to re-evaluate what entertainment is and what MTV is. Miley Cyrus isn't responsible for being a role model for kids anymore. |

I don't really give a damn that she was 'a role model for kids', but you've got to have at least a little dignity and self-respect if you're going to be on TV. Going and doing something like this is just...proving that she has none, really. Also, I'm not aware of what MTV's viewers like to see, but it's just insulting, imo. |

Exactly. She's just bein Miley (pun intented). She isn't a kid, so why should she be a role model for kids? EDIT: Sorry Drew, didn't see your post until after I posted. MTV was made to be that inappropriate music video channel. Literally, "Music Television." The first song they played was "Video killed the radio star" or whatever. It was made to be what Miley did Sunday night and what Lady Gaga has been doing for a few years now; being different, even if their version of "different" is inappropriate, all the better for MTV. The fact that she did that even though she knew it would be televised doesn't mean that she has no self respect, it just means that she does't give a damn what other people think about her, another thing that I admire her for. I'll add that the reason I felt it was wrong (used in the loosest form) is because both parties are married. Also, I don't see it as entertainment, I see it as trash TV. But I can see why some people do find it entertaining. |

If this were a case where a person was doing something that had a result other than shock value and 'entertainment', I could agree with you. |

I can't really see any issue with what she did. Her target audience isn't young children and neither are the VMAs. She's using her sexuality to sell records just like hundreds of people have done before her. Remember Holly Valance's music video Kiss where she was nude? Or a bunch of Madonna videos? How about Cher's turn back Time? It's been going on forever and I don't see why it should change. I'd like to ask those who think she was wrong, if a man did something similarly sexual at these awards, would anybody care? |

I can look at this from both sides, but in the end I will only argue for one. While Miley is indeed of age and can do what she likes with her body, however it is at a painful level now, every person has a rebellious phase but this is not rebellious, it's self-degrading and she is setting up to be the next Lindsay Lohan. It has nothing to do with the children who may have once idolized her, it is simply the public image she is making for herself, and it's quite an annoying one. It's as if she cannot make an appearance without making a fool of herself in one way, and we see her tongue more than enough these days. I am not demanding she be immature, she is only what, 20? She can do what she likes, but she doesn't have to seek so much attention when she is already pushing the boundaries of "gone too far." |

If you're raising your children on Miley Cyrus or other idiot modern pop stars like that that's around these days then you ought to be prepared for something like this coming your way. Also I don't think her gender matters. She just acted like an idiot while attempting to be cool. Big deal, get some sense and stop being her fan then. When was this on TV btw, for us who aren't glued to Cable all day? (Yes I'm in a bad mood possibly) |

“Making weed illegal is a little bit paranoid, don’t you think? It’s like saying God made a mistake, you know what I mean? It’s like, you’ve got the whole world and Earth and all its holy creations, right? And God is like, Hmm, lookit, my whole world in all its holy ways, and he’s like, Oh-my-me-oh-sh**, I left weed in here. Yeah right, I left weed in here. I don't see why people are so butthurt over this? Jeez most hiphop perfomances have women dancing that are more scantily clad than she was and doing the twerking. Yet you don't see people say that "she needs to be more mature", infact all I hear is how hot that girl is. Seems a bit hypocritical to me. |

I know little and nothing on the matter, but a lot of people are taking issue with the racial aspect of it. Apparently her "twerking" is appropriating black culture or something like that. (Don't ask me any further because I am very uninformed) I don't care for things like "being a role model", artists aren't paid to be role-models, they are paid to create art and entertain. I just find it embarrassing she couldn't find a better way to entertain and "create art" than acting like a desperate doped up moron, usually an indicative of lack of talent. |

I feel bad her for her family, I would be so embarrassed. I don't see why people would be butthurt. To me its just a sad story. She was a nice young girl and now she is some crazy weird girl who has absolutely zero respect for herself. Sad. |
