I really tried to get into that game but it felt too dated for me.

I honestly like it better than WoW, WoW felt like absolute s*** in terms of combat.

I'm the opposite. I prefer story-based games that really get you thinking.

I don't mind it when the game play matches up to it but otherwise they may has well just made it into a film or a book instead.

And you got that from Inside?
If that was a story, then it was a complete mess that made very little sense.

Then again that's also how you could define LIMBO.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?!

Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power.

As an English grad, I really enjoy ambiguity. It was a cleverly written story with a meaning that isn't easily grasped just by playing through the game.

In regards to story and gameplay I'm neutral on the subject, in the best cases the story and gameplay should almost be one, but generally unless the gameplay or story is bad I can enjoy both and just play it. Never had a problem with the TLOU or Donkey Kong in those regards.

Gameplay paired with a terrible story can still be a really good, even exceptional, game, while a game with an incredible story but shocking gameplay is just a terrible game.

I don't want to say gameplay comes first, because the vast majority of my favourite games are equally as good, if not superior in the story department, but if the gameplay is abysmal then it shouldn't even be a game. Just write a book.

I agree with that, but some of the games mentioned in this thread I've really enjoyed, even on a gameplay level. The Last of Us is an amazing game. Not only was the story great, but I don't think the gameplay is really worth criticizing. It played a lot like the Uncharted games. It was fun. I can understand gameplay criticisms being aimed at games like Limbo and Inside, but only if you aren't a fan of the genre. I'm a huge fan of puzzle platformers, and I absolutely loved them. Limbo, Inside, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, etc. are some of my favorite games of all time. They're not only intriguing, but they're fun as well. The only time I don't enjoy a puzzle platforming game is if the puzzles are too difficult to the point of being nearly impossible to figure out without a guide. For example, Braid really made my brain ache, and I had to quit playing it.

Video games are basically a modern form of literature. They're story-telling adventures.

Yeah, I was just speaking very generally. I've nothing against Limbo, and if I had any money it's a game I would like to play. Likewise with ICO, which I unfortunately missed out on, but Shadow of the Colossus is a game I genuinely adore. The gameplay obviously revolved around the concept and story, and it's all the better for it.

They're examples of it being done right. Unfortunately, I really didn't like The Last of Us. What I know of its story, it's not something that necessitates being a game in order to be told, and from what I played of it I found the game generic and lacking as a survival game. Too easy, too many checkpoints, and too many resources.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

For me I'd add in aesthetics to this.

With TLOU I'd have the gameplay at 7/10 story at 6/10 and then the aesthetics...I'm not sure but much higher anyway.
It never done anything wholly original with the other two concepts but the world design and whatnot were great. That scene with the giraffe's is great and just generally the locations looked fantastic even on PS3.

Wind Waker is another game for me that nailed it in aesthetics and not necessarily anything else.

These days gameplay is pretty meh there's not a lot of room for innovative ideas but there's tons of creativity left for world building and such so I find it hard to rank gameplay as the most important.

Just checked out the top 100 games on Master System according to Retro-Sanctuary. There's some cool stuff I didn't know about on there.

Too bad this system didn't get the recognition in the US that it deserved. It s***s all over Nintendo.

Oh yeah, there's a mini SEGA Genesis coming out: http://cheezburger.com/8965144320/sega-genesis-and-nintendo-mini-nes-go-head-to-head-console-war

Sounds awesome think I'll definitely get that over the NES thing really, especially since it has way more games.

I heard it's just a third party thing not officially endorsed by Sega. In which case just buy a real one.
