If we're speaking strictly hardware, PS4 and X1 was doomed to fall behind early. They are using DX11, while the PC will get DX12 very soon, if it doesn't have it already.
Consoles don't use DX11, they have their own unique low-level APIs. DX12/Mantle are similar to what consoles have had all along.

DX12 is packaged with Windows 10.
Point being that they can never keep up with PC.

I'm probably never going to by consoles from Microsoft and Sony again.

As for the games themselves, only Nintendo has been delivering so far. I reckon the next Uncharted will give PS4 an edge.
By that logic no because the Wii-U's hardware is pitiful compared to the other consoles nevermind PC.
I didn't include the Wii U because that's a given since they are focusing mainly on the entertainment aspect of gaming.

A wise plan.

But Steve is right, graphics don't really matter, though I think that view is held by pretty much everyone. Good graphics are just gravy.

Framerate is important, though 30 FPS without drops should be considered the bare minimum. Anything less is getting dangerously close to unplayable, especially if the game in question is an action game.

If I were a console gamer, I would want all my games to be 1080p60, even if the requirements for that involves reducing the quality of the game's assets. Resolution and framerate affect playability a lot more than high-res textures and accurate lighting.

Speaking of which, remember Agni's Philosophy? The PS4's hardware is pretty similar in speed to the PC that was used to render that tech demo; we might be seeing games that look like pretty soon. A little bit of graphics whoring is no issue, right?
I love building PCs. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask. I can help you with almost any kind of PC you'd want to build.

If you want great framerate from a console, the console may deliver. However you need to have a TV (or monitor) that can handle 60 frames or better.

That's something to consider.

As for graphics, it's not important to me. I choose PC because for me it's easier and in all cases (if you have money to buy a good gaming pc) it can do it better. The only exception is exclusives.

i know what you mean, but the whole premise was that this is the generation that can make games run at 1080p for consoles.

i don't see why higher resolution isn't a good thing since the companies are seducing us to buy the new hardware that has 8gb of ram and faster and more powerful cpu and graphics card.

I mentioned this in another thread the other day and I'll say it again here.

It matters not how technically advanced the graphics are. What is important is how they are presented on screen. This is why you can have 16 bit Nintendo and Sega games that look superior to games made for later consoles. This is why some PS1 games look like a fuzzy mess of random shapes and others still look relatively sharp in comparison. Get the presentation and style right and graphics almost become irrelevant.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

I'm wondering if Nintendo are going to kill themselves by focusing on mobile platforms? If that's really legit I hope they fail at it so everyone else doesn't copy them.

Mobile games are just god awful.

Considering they already have DS which generally does better than their consoles it's obviously just so they can make "mobile games" and suck money out of all the stupid people who pay for it like all the rest of them.
You know the type.

"Oh hey look you can build this cool house...it's going to take 23 days though...or you could just give us 3 bucks and it will take 23 seconds!"
Or
"Here's a really cool powerup/weapon/in game currency you definitely need to make any sort of progress. P.S you can buy 500 of them in the store for only 2 dollars you might need to buy 8 million of them to get anywhere but who cares its a fun game :w00t: "

What can we do to stop this crap? Konami are apparently switching to mobile too. Casual gamers are just going to ruin gaming, putting effort in to games will no longer be profitable therefore basically nobody will.
Destroy all mobile gamers.
That's the solution.

That's a bit harsh. Plus they're gonna have the NX too. Nintendo just likes to experiment, considering how financially safe they are.

Unlike almost all of their competitors, they've actually done handheld gaming with great success. I can imagine the new mobile device being like a hybrid cell phone/handheld gaming device.

Wait, it's a device? I thought they would just be developing software?

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

There would be no profit to their mobile games without ad revenue and/or micro-transactions, unless they're going to have the gall to sell them for £30 or something.

They'll obviously know that so you can bet they'll be typical mobile games, that's where the money is mobile games are a billion dollar industry and are very very cheap to make, from a business angle they are perfect.

Sooner or later as they turn a profit from mobile games and less and less from their consoles, they'll just become a mobile games company. At least mostly.

Isn't it kind of ironic how Nintendo are the company widely renowned for caring about their games and gamers most yet they're taking the obvious business route before any other big name?

It will be years yet but unless people stand up to s***ty micro-transactions for in game currency etc it's going to happen and kids growing up with it won't know what real games are, were.

Apparently they're only making five or six over the course of two years, ao it appears that they're going for quality over quantity. Plus, if they really wanted to move to mobile, then why would they say that their new console (if it is a mobile device) wont replace the Wii U? That implies that they're going to be supporting the U for a long while after NX is released.

I wonder if they're all rushing out the next gen to better compete with PC hardware? I hope not.

Good games that squeeze every drop of power out of the machine are better than s*** games that are only there to look pretty.

Can see the whole graphics thing only getting worse and worse of the next decade or so, there's so little ambition towards games now it's just like LOOK AT THE LIGHTING EFFECTS THOUGH
"Dude this game is generic and horrible..."
BUT THE LIGHTING EFFECTS also 60 FPS CONSISTENTLY, U LIEK NO?

We don't need hardware rushed out we need genius ideas and implementation.

Hopefully some games in the coming years fix that, large scale games particularly. New standards need to be set.
60 FPS isn't just a graphics thing, it improves on imput delay iirc. Graphics I'm not too concerned about but I don't want to play at a tar 30 FPS.

Yoshi's Island looks better than Star Wars Episode 1.

Shinobi III looks better than Ninja: Shadow of Darkness.

Sonic 2, looks better than Tenchu.

Being in 3D does not automatically make a game look better.
