I don't think DOOM should take priority really, it would be cool if it was that one FPS to stand out from the crowd but I doubt it will be, Wolfenstein New Order was great but not like GOTY, can't see it being much better.
Wolfenstein was a good shooter but full of a lot of nonsense story and awful clichés, it did stand out from the rest and probably one of the best games of 2014, but I don't see it having much replay value. RPG games often have a lot of reply value, it's the way they are designed. I suppose you can have a shooter with strong replay value but I don't see it from the Doom series.

The thing that puts me off most shooters is general nonsense, never complete Wolfenstein for that reason, nor many CoD games or Battlefield, story gets littered with silly stuff.

@"The world's best shooter game"

I am sorry but that title is reserved for "Counter Strike 1.5/1.6". You can probably give to all your other shooter games the following titles "A good attempt to be a decent shooter game for a very short time".

And the title "The game that first pioneered FPS genere" goes to Doom 1 and 2.

Greetings. I will be your waifu this season.

Yeah they seem to quickly devolve in to "Let's see what crazy accident our hero can survive next!"

Battlefield tries something with conspiracy and stuff and...yeah they care about multiplayer mostly.

CoD's just like gadgets! New things! All of which you'll use for one mission! And explosions!

For story the only shooter I'm looking forward to is Order 1886 it seems like they're trying with the story...however it'll probably lack replay value.

To have replay value, I feel a branching story and world would be required, if it's mainly a straight line, then there's no reason to go back, especially if there are annoying levels involved :p

This is my point.

DOOM and Quake were basically the pioneers of shooters, and yet they haven't been on consoles for a generation or two depending on series. DOOM got a remaster for previous games for the 360 but I haven't seen anything of Quake since the old PC games that still ran on DOOM 1 graphics, not any official releases anyway.

The fathers of the genre need to be respected, if not completely made relevant again, a new instalment for each would be great.

Yeah but they'd have to be different to be good, there's been tons of similar games since just having the title DOOM won't make it massively more fun than all the other shooters that have the same gameplay/weapons etc etc.
It won't be relevant because it was one of the first popular shooters out there it needs more enjoyable hopefully original content to bring people back for more than a few months until the next shooter pops out.

An expansive story would be nice as Rogue said some branches would be good, so long as it's actually interesting and well written.

That alone would set it apart instead of just the arbitrary campaign mode most FPS games have so it seems less shallow and all about multiplayer.

DOOM had pretty much only campaign, it wasn't a hugely long game but still decently long. It was also very challenging and there aren't many shooters I can think of these days that are legitimately challenging and not just made frustratingly broken by a less than honourable community.

Doom had it's time and place, I don't think it can really stand out anymore, name will sell but it doesn't make something good, sometimes it's better to just reflect on the past, remember the good things. Doom had it's flaws though, no jump button, very annoying, you had to run to get over a ledge, but I think if it gets released today, it might attract new people but older people would be disappointed, it can't match the past and I think would struggle to compete.

The most challenging shooter I can think of at the moment would be Deus Ex: Human Revolution, that had a strong campaign and fair share of puzzles, but it was more of a Shooter/RPG hybrid to an extent. I does have a great sound track too, I recommend you go listen to it!

@The most challenging shooter

I am sorry but this titled is reserved for "Counter Strike 1.5/1.6". I think your game would probably be more suited for title such as

1."A decent modern challenging puzzle game"
2."A unique FPS/RPG game"

@I recommend you go listen to it.

I recommend you check out battlezone 1 (1998).It's a hybrid FPS/strategy (RTS).It's kinda like RA and C & C but with of course an FPS and RTS mixture.

I don't think DOOM will work out with the same format these days.

There's a similar game, forgot what it's called has the same sort of style of pickups and gameplay but is third person.
Massive failure.

It works in Shadow Warrior because you get a f***in' katana and can cut the heads off demons etc but DOOM is and always has been straight FPS.
Shooters have evolved, if it's stuck in the past it will suck.
But if it totalky goes with the crowd it won't stand out.

Isn't Counter Strike the game where you run up ladders and camping in a corner standing on team mates is a viable strategy?

I am sorry but that title is reserved for "most of the Call of duty games".

@"I approve of this post"

I guess it's the price of fame for CS 1.5/1.6. It's just so popular that it has attracted people like you who will insult the game at any small "opportunities".

But Ironically, you helped me answered this part. Thanks.

@steve

You wouldn't be talking like that if you ever played the game in a private LAN 5 vs 5 match. And I can assure you that "camping" will not ensure any winning. Rather it's
1.Team Coordination
2.Communcation
3.Strategy
4.Economy management

Please don't compare the other FPS game "logics or strategy" with CS. You know there is a reason it is still alive and not any other game has lasted this long.
