Well to be honest, blocking TE's roles are much less important in today's passing NFL. And even scouts don't look for blocking TE's anymore. If you can't catch the ball as a TE, you're not going to be on the field as much.

You of all people should know how valuable blocking TE's with you being a Ravens fan, The 49ers probably next to the Ravens must have a really good blocking TE, the 49ers got Vernon Davis who is very underrated on his blocking ability, I remember when the Niners played the Cowboys a couple season go Davis completely dominated D. Ware!

I'm not saying anything contradictory to that but it would affect my rankings

The Ravens TE's were actually used more as receivers. Since we had Vontae Leach blocking for Rice, we had the flexibility to have Pitta receiving along with Smith and Boldin.

Again, Please specify your lists. Make some reasons for what this list is based off. Blocking TE's are just as vital as a receiving TE, they just get less praise for it because scoring is more flashy than blocking. Same with a RB, if your RB can't pass block for a QB then the defense can send a safety or extra lb to blitz and sack every time.

Most TE don't become great all around without knowing and being good at blocking.

As for the list, be more specific on how you made the list and how you want others to go off so they can coordinate their thoughts.

See the only reason why I didn't put blocking as a major category is because, well, it's really not anymore. Pure blocking tight ends aren't drafted anymore. If you can't catch, you don't make the field. For example, Ravens had a major hole at TE this year after Dennis Pitta. They signed Visanthe Shiancoe to fill the void. Ed Dickson was mostly a blocking TE last year with Pitta out receiving. The idea was most likely to move Dickson into the receiving role and have Shiancoe be the blocker. They cut Shiancoe and added Dallas Clark, another receiving TE. TE don't need to be great blockers anymore. Sure it's a nice luxury, but it doesn't give them a major boost in these kinds of rankings IMO. Vernon Davis is prolly the best blocking TE, but that won't move him ahead of Tony Gonzalez or Jason Witten (IMO), because he's just not consistent catching the ball and that's his main job.

Tony Gonzo and Witten are excellent pass and run blockers.

Dickson was drafted for his receiving abilities but was also an excellent blocker. The only reason he didn't blossom was because Flacco had more chemistry with Pitta later on. Todd Heap was a good blocker too when he played. Anyways. That's not the point. Clarify your lists bro.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

Vernon Davis is a monster and probably number 3 at least. The other two are obviously Gronk and Graham but it is a pretty steep drop after that. Witten is probably 4. He is a reception monster, but, doesn't score many touchdowns. Still, he is reliable as hell and plays through injuries. Tough dude.

1. Vernon Davis - We all know his skills in the receiving game, but he is also arguably one of the best blocking tight ends in the league
2. Rob Gronkowski - Same deal.
3. Jason Witten
4. Jimmy Graham
5. Tony Gonzalez
6. Heath Miller
7. Dwayne Allen
8. Martellus Bennett
9. Fred Davis
10. Delanie Walker

Vernon Davis could be considered #1, I can see that. Kaepernick just didn't target him much last year. He sort of force fed Crabtree and overloaded him with targets. I'm not sure if he is going to target Davis more this year, but, receiving or blocking he is elite. His speed and athleticism is crazy and he is clutch as hell. Boldin will have an impact, definitely, but, without properly utilizing Vernon Davis I don't see how they can make up for the lack of Crabtree. Kaepernick just didn't target him enough. Alex Smith did, but, Alex Smith is in Kansas City :p
