I don't think we should treat every animal on Earth like humans, but the animals we choose to take in and nurture should be regarded as such. I'm not saying we need to go to court to settle animal matters, but something should be done. |

You would have to, unless you wanted to set up some sort of ADR, perhaps a tribunal dedicated to animal cases. That isn't cheap either. Why focus on trying to treat animals fairly when we're having trouble treating other human beings equally? Fact is, it's a battle of finances vs. justice. Finances always win. |

Name is forced to be changed...because of something religious. Dog gets blown up...because of something religious. I'm noticing a pattern here. Something stupid or awful happens...religion is close to follow behind. |

Yeah it's almost as bad an excuse as "they started it!" Religious country or not nobody follows the exact rules of said religion, plenty things frowned upon by religion are legal but things frowned upon by decent human beings are legal because religion says it's ok, what? Make up your mind, is religion the law or what. Also I wasn't suggesting every animal be treated like humans but definitely pets. Killing something you or someone else has an emotional attachment too is just barbaric other than when for example the animal is dying already and you humanely put it out of it's misery. The only difference between killing a dog and a human is that the human, in most cases, could defend themselves. If you're walking up to your dog with a meat cleaver it's still going to wag it's tail at it's best friend in the world then you betray that love you don't deserve. |

Religion is completely irrelevant in this case. He's insane, his beliefs regarding religion shouldn't even be taken into consideration. So, just because a dog's a pet and a cow isn't means that you can slaughter the cow without any doubt whatsoever? If Dogs are treated as equals, so should every animal. Why're dogs so much better than cows/sheep/pigs? I don't condone killing pets at all, but if you're going to give them more rights, they should apply to all animals. |

Killing a cow for food is an excuse though, there's no logical reason to need to kill your perfectly healthy non possessed lovable dog. Killing is never nice but livestock are killed for good reason, the world can't run on crops alone the demand would be too high. Plus they're supposed to be killed in a humane way, the situation isn't the same as some psychopath killing his dog to satisfy his own sick sense of enjoyment. Killing should never be just for fun, in any case. We're supposed to be civilized creatures that know better and yet we blow up dogs. Ok yeah that's a rare case but you get what I mean. The reality is the dog probably barked a bit so he killed it rather than training it and made up this totally bulls*** psycho excuse to get off with it, and look, he basically is getting off with the murder of the dog it's only the explosives that matter. You can go buy 30 puppies and a shotgun and kill them all without consequence. Why? Does the fact that you own them mean they have no right to live? Bringing that back to livestock, they have a right to live too, but the survival of humans comes first for us. A pet doesn't hinder your survival typically so there's no reason to kill it. Also there is no proof that the dog suffered or that it didn't but the act of killing it shouldn't be brushed aside so easily, he probably tortured it in some way. Take the explosion out of the equation and should the judge really be all thumbs up over it? |

You would want to think that, but my dog was run over by someone. It sucks but, that guy doesn't deserve to be charged with murder. It's not his fault. However, killing without an accident should be a big deal. |

I can't see why anyone would do that to a dog ? He has to be insane. |

I think I'm with Drew on this. Morally, they should be punished; pragmatically, there's too much other s*** to consider. However, that still doesn't mean we can't smack someone on the head if we see them abusing an animal. |

People who run over humans aren't usually charged with murder either. |

You can't simply make assumptions like that. Considering what the situation would be like if the explosion didn't take place is irrelevant, because it did. The man may have abused/tortured the dog, but that's a fact that can't be confirmed, due to the situation. Pets are technically possessions, anyway. People 'own' pets, correct? People make financial transactions in regards to the ownership of pets, correct? I'm not trying to say the man didn't do anything wrong, or that it's okay to abuse animals, but we can't make assumptions. |

I agree that animals will never be treated the same as humans, but I personally feel that they are equal and should be treated as such; however, I also understand biology, evolution, and the food chain. |

Actually, there's something here and I'm sure in other states where you can claim your pet as an "emotional companion" or something like that. It bypasses the rule a lot of apartments have about not allowing pets. |

Oh my gosh, flashbacks to Toby and Fluffy </3 (Toby was purposelly ran over repeatedly and Fluffy was poisoned) That's terrible. Makes me cry when I hear these stories... And was it just me or did the dog look sad in the picture? |
