In American society, it's usually not favorable for a woman to be unshaven. But America is America; we have to be different from the rest of the world. |

I just came across this looking it up and thought it was pretty interesting: Spoiler: click to toggle But, just to name one, the Sikh religion forbids shaving. You could google it if you wanted, I'm on a tablet and am trying to multitask and it's getting difficult. |

Saying that they're obligated to is like saying women are obligated to like men or men are obligated to like women. |

As others have said, no, we're not obligated to; or at least, not in the sense that there's some rule somewhere stating that 'all women must shave regularly'. Or wax. Or whatever. That said, I do feel there is a certain pressure from society to be well maintained. Hell, I started shaving my legs when I was 11 - I naturally have very dark hair, and other kids naturally picked up on the fact that, yes, my legs looked extremely hairy. If I wanted to wear a skirt, then I had to shave. That turned out to be quite entertaining. =/ Now, honestly, I just feel uncomfortable if I haven't waxed/shaved, same as I don't feel comfortable if I don't pluck my eyebrows regularly or ... I don't know, if I haven't moisturized or something. It's just all a part of a regime so I don't even notice it anymore. I'm very self conscious about my body hair. I don't know if I would be as much so had kids not made me more aware of it when I was younger, but I think I still would be somewhat self-conscious, sure. Self-conscious, and infinitely jealous of my sister, with her fair complexion and colouring ... |

Obviously you don't share a bathroom with a man. But honestly, women don't need to shave. It's not obligated, but it's nice to many people. @Ria: No worries. It's normal to be self conscious but all in all you face a lot of the problems a lot of other girls face, just like me with guys. =D Edited by POOHEAD189, Aug 8 2013, 08:22 AM.

I did when my brother still lived with us. Now that you mention it, there was a lot of hair. But then again, I've shared a bathroom with 2 different girls at different times in my life, and now I don't even use the upstairs bathroom because of how gross it is because she leaves hair everywhere. Including extensions that are downright disgusting. @Ria - You are SO not alone, sister. When I was little, I had massive eyebrows and hairy everything. I have really dark hair, too. I dated this guy in 5th grade (who now looks like he gained a couple of zeros on his weight, and I look f***ing fabulous, so karma's a b*tch) that when I broke up with him, he started calling me sasquach. Of course, then everyone called me sasquach. Like, EVERYONE. Kids in different grades, , everyone in my grade. And when I went to the teachers about it, they did absolutely NOTHING. Not like a little 5th grader was being bullied by the whole school every waking moment for the next 3 years or anything. Anyways. Middle school came around and I found a straightener for the first time and my older cousin did my hair and I had my eyebrows waxed for the first time that everyone realized I was actually hot. |

No one is obligated to wear clothes outside but society will make you feel like wearing clothes. Women would feel like shaving because of this since its seen as more attractive though there's probably some guys who like hairy women. Its actually now a trend now for Guys to shave. |

I don't think women should have to shave if the don't want to. But don't complain when a man doesn't find you attractive because you're hairier than he is. People just don't like it generally, some do, some tolerate it, most find it unattractive. I wouldn't say it's much to do with society not the appeal of it anyway society isn't why men look at smooth legs and find them attractive, it's because we find that more attractive. Being obligated to shave is society based though. May not have started out that way but it's built in to us now so to be blunt if you can't be bothered shaving don't get mad at men for not liking it. Men get turned on by what they see, you see your own hairy legs every day so associate that with being manly. It's not going to have the same appeal on a woman is it? As far as your subconscious is concerned you're looking at a manly woman if they have hairy legs. |

@ POOHEAD198 - that's very true =) and hey, why would salons offer waxing and hair removal services if it wasn't required, right? xD I have to admit, I feel ok being a little self conscious - enough to maintain myself, you know? But you're right, definitely; and it's nice to know you're not alone, you know? =D @donttrustfaith - aww, I'm so sorry that happened to you! That's awful! =( even worse that the teachers wouldn't do anything - I can definitely relate on that front as well, but now, as a teacher, I think it's horrible that that would happen. Kids are supposed to feel safe when they're in school. Teachers are supposed to be responsible for that. Dark colouring IS a pain, though, no? I mean, I have to admit, I LOVE my natural hair colour; everything else, not so much! xD and yay karma! =D he got what he deserved! And awesome! =D good on you!! ^^ |

I want to be a band director one day, and you can bet your bucks I won't be letting that kind of crap happen in my band! Here's another question: Do women only do it because it's mainstream? To attract men? (obviously not always, because I shave and I would like most men to stay a good 20ft away from me, no offense) Because their moms do? I do it for my girl. And if I want to wear shorts, but my legs are more than prickly, I still wear shorts. |

Um, no. Shaving is a human concept created by our egos. By some human definitions in society some may say they are but in many cultures they are not. If you are asking for my preference, I'd say not. People are not obligated to anything. |

Perhaps it has some relation to cleanliness or at least the appearance of cleanliness? I know that my mustache and beard can look pretty awful if left to grow of it's own accord. It can get pretty smelly too. |

It's like asking if you're obligated to have nice breath or clean teeth. Sure someone may find you attractive despite that, but you shouldn't expect it would be a person who brushes their own teeth. The whole idea of "why should I bother to do my self up for others" wreaks of feminism, making men out to be overly demanding and dismissive of a women's natural beauty but really it's just as good as saying "I'm happy not being found attractive" or "I'm happy being with someone I don't find attractive." Which is never true for anyone who isn't asexual or (genuinely, not just saying so) hung up with intellectual pursuits. Even on a DBZ forum there is the obligatory implication that men are insensitive and oppressive to women. It seems inescapable. |

Woman can also, surprise surprise, shave because it makes them feel good about themselves, not just because they think men like it ![]() Basically though it's their choice - I know a fair few guys who shave / wax and such for various reasons but again it's because of how they feel about themselves. I also know a couple of girls who aren't too fussed about shaving and a fair few of them are even in relationships. It's not a be-all and end all and really as long as it's their choice and they're happy doing it that's fine. The fact that society oftentimes places such pressures on people is a little hard, but is changing slowly. |
