Constant Dreams/Nightmares

Within the past couple of months or so, I've noticed that the amount of dreams I've had (or at least remember) has been increasing, as well as the number of nightmares. Some nights I will have horrible nightmares that will leave me crying when I wake up. I like having dreams sometimes, but these incessant nightmares are kind of irritating because they cause distress and put me in a foul mood.

What are the possible causes for this? Why are my dreams increasing, and why am I having so many nightmares?

What's been going on in your life recently?

I guess I could say I've been depressed, but not terribly so. Nothing crazy enough to cause all of these nightmares, I would think. But I do have a high emotional tolerance.

Are you under any kind of stress? Are you suffering from recent emotional difficulties or traumas? Have you been working for long hours? Have you recently changed your diet? Are you on any new medication?

The thing about nightmares or any kind of dream is that contrary to what Freud believed, they don't really mean much at all. Just because you strangle a woman to death in your dream, doesn't mean you're going to go do it in real life. With that being said, it can still be disturbing of course.

Dreams in general are good. It means you are sleeping well.

That's actually a common misconception of psychodynamics and dreams. They made no such assertions similar to what you just said. Freud probably comes close, but he's more of a historical figure and a lot of his stuff is outdated. A few of his other contributions have been expanded upon.

While still a bit sketchy, modern therapies involving dreams aren't as farfetched as, "o i will interpret ur dream based on nothin at all." Instead it takes into account a lot of other s*** like what you and I just asked OFG.

Sorry I'm not really sure I can make the connection between going to church and your nightmares stopping.

When I was little I used to have terrible nightmares most nights and night terrors which are entirely different. Then one day it just stopped happening. I genuinely thought at the time that I was witnessing the face of Satan. It was pretty frightening. I'm still a bit scarred from it actually.

Feelings of worthlessness, wasted potential, lack of motivation and fear of what life may have in store for me. Just general things like that, mostly, aside from the ever-present family issues.

I think a reason why I recently started getting a lot more dreams(and more nightmares) probably because ever since summer started I took on so much that it got to the point that I had no free time so I'd stay up t'ill like 4-5am just having me time playing on Xbox live, or going out. Pretty much my bedtime schedule and stress have gotten so much out of hand, that's its manifesting itself into weekly nightmares.

This in some way may be happening to you to... In a way idk.

It takes a mere second for treasure to turn to trash.

I have horrible chronic nightmares and have my whole life. Not sure what advice I can give. I just deal with it. It's awful but not something that is easy to control.

I honestly feel heaps bad for the people who have Chronic nightmares. It is a pretty damn scary experience. I had one for a 2 week period when I was a bit younger, dreamt of nothing but getting slaughtered, stabbed, basically murdered in about 150 different ways, and it wouldn't matter if I slept all night or woke up 3 times. I'd have one every time I went to sleep.
Then I got sick of it, I went back to sleep basically with a vendetta to kill this thing that was tormenting me, so to sum it up (it was a pretty long dream I pretty much had to hunt him down), we actually wrestled, I got a gun, and shot him 6 times in the head while crying, and of course, when I woke up I was crying too haha.

Obviously this may not help anybody, but I wanted to pass it along.

I think I can count one two hands how many nightmares I've had my entire life. I just don't get them, and when I do, I don't wake up.

I have stressed a lot the last year or so, and it seems like sleep is the only thing that can relieve that stress. Then again, I fall asleep to music or something soothing. Maybe you should try that, because background noise interfer with your dreams.
