 Indeed, it's hypothetical, so it really doesn't matter.
I can say Goku could have teleported Vegeta on King Ka's planet, told him about the fusion dance, and, after discovering Vegeta already knew about the dance, done the fusion and then come back to Earth as Gogeta in order to be killed by Boohan.

And that's because, what-if or not, we have two statements fresh from the manga against Gogeta, whether we like it or not.
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has even a chance to get its pants on

Still it doesn't hold any weight since it never happened.
Anyway, glad you agree that Gogeta would be killed by Boohan.

 Trunks' reaction to Piccolo at least puts him in the realm of Initial Perfect Cell's power. He might be an idiot, but there's no way he'd make a mistake that big.

Unless you have the Boo Saga Base Saiyans coming near Initial Perfect Cell...

 All we have that puts Trunks/Vegeta's performances against the Cell kids above Piccolo is less blacked in wounds that are shown inconsistently. Even Goku had less blacked in wounds than Piccolo and he was on the ground. Trunks had less blacked in wounds than Vegeta.

It's clear Piccolo was not at his limit. Unlike Goku and the humans.

When I say he wasn't at his limit, I don't mean in power, I mean he hadn't reached the limits of what he could do then. Basically, I'm saying he still plenty of fight left in him. Nothing to do with increasing his power.

The humans and Goku had reached the limits of what their current power could do and were down for the count, Vegeta/Trunks/Piccolo weren't.

 I misinterpreted your stance, then.

Piccolo wasn't beaten down as badly as the humans, but comparing him to Goku is somewhat iffy. We don't know how powerful Goku was after his fight with Cell, but it was clear that he was too fatigued to put up a fight.

 All we know is that SSJ Goku is greatly weaker than SSJ Vegeta (2nd ROSAT) at this point in time, during his fight with the Juniors.
