Wondering how Cell's evolution works...did he really specifically need the androids to change forms or could he have absorbed another warrior and transformed? He got on fine with just absorbing humans, just there weren't really enough and not powerful enough to make him progress much further than he did. So what if he absorbed Piccolo instead? Or #16... Kind of off topic but what if Gero in the main timeline actually had another transformation for Cell? Just not the Cell we know #16 wasn't in Trunks' timeline so Cell wouldn't 'recognize' him as an android target... Perhaps his main timeline counterpart was set to have another stage of evolution but Gero never got the chance to complete it. There's nothing about he androids that suggests why he would need to absorb them anyway, he's not in any way mechanical but they are so it doesn't make much sense. What if he absorbed Vegeta rather than #18? Surely that would have put him in his Perfect form, and then some. |

It's like a puzzle. The androids are the pieces to complete the puzzle. The androids were made with the ''piece'' so as to complete Cell's evolution. I don't think he just needed to absorb someone with the equivalent power for his completion. I highly doubt it. |

17 and 18 were designed specifically for Cell to reach his perfect form, absorbing others would be helpful and make him stronger, but he needs 17 and 18 to be perfect |

If I recall correctly, it was Gero's computer that specified Cell needed Numbers 17 and 18 in order to be completed |

It's possible he would've reached a power beyond what he had in his perfect form; say for example, he would've absorbed SSJ2 Gohan's power. But as far as reaching the form, yeah it was pretty much necessary to absorb the androids. It was crucial to his evolution.. |

What they said. They are an integral part of his being. Absorbing others grants a small boost in power, but he wouldn't actually transform. He did that to entire cities in his imperfect form. |

He got as strong as he could absorbing humans. He needed the androids to advance to the next level. |

I wouldn't say as strong as he could. Seeing how he decided to continue to absorb humans for his own pleasure for more power. |

Chapter: 363 (DBZ 169), P12.1 Cell: “Human life extract alone isn’t enough for me to reach my perfect form. I need to merge with two important, particular life forms...The computer told me of these two particular life forms…….Dr. Gero’s creations—Androids No.17 and No.18!” Chapter: 364 (DBZ 170), P8.3 Cell: “I’ll keep absorbing human life energy unnoticed, and steadily increase my power. And once I’ve greatly exceeded the power of No.17 and No.18, I’ll force them to merge with me…!” |

Yeah, second quote says he doesn't reach a limit in his imperfect form. He can continue to keep increasing his power via Human Life Extract. His perfect form is a whole 'nother case. |

He'll never reach the power of his perfect form via humans, though, is the point. |

I think his limit wasn't that far away from how strong he was when he fought 16 simply because Semi PC must be above Base Cell's full potential.

But if you think about it Dr. Gero never counted on there being any Super Saiyans, as far as he calculated the absolute most powerful beings other than Cell would be his androids, the biggest boosts possible. Maybe he made them so powerful because he also calculated everything on Earth wouldn't give as big a boost of power, because Cell just needed power and the amount on the planet already wasn't enough. Except that as it happens there would have been more than enough had he absorbed a Super Saiyan and/or an Ascended Saiyan. The fact that Cell doesn't consider this can be attributed to it not being programmed in to him rather than it not being possible, perhaps Gero never left that as an option because he never figured they would get nearly as powerful as they did making it futile. Surely his body would need to transform if by some miracle he absorbed an Ascended Vegeta in his Imperfect Form? His body would have to adapt to that power because it's too much for the form, transforming would be how. |

You're missin the point. It's not because the androids were powerful; it was because it was part of Cells programming. Absorbing a super Saiyan would make imperfect cell stronger, but he'd still be imperfect cell. You can gold plate a puzzle piece, and reinforce it with iron coating. But until the other pieces of the puzzle are applied, it's still incomplete. |
