Novacane for the pain

Need somewhere to talk about this while I read it and I don't want to clog up the GOT thread. I'd appreciate if any spoilers past what was already shown on the TV show were tagged because I'm still only about halfway through A Clash of Kings.

One thing I really wanted to post about what the difference between Robb's book character compared to the show. The book character makes so much more sense. In the show he's basically Ned but a bit younger. He is way too competent throughout most of the second season, so when he f***s up later it seems really odd. In the books he's younger and not having him as a POV character really works to portraying his character. He's only a 15 year old boy who got thrust in to things he wasn't ready for at all. Less than a year before he called the banners against the Lannisters, he'd only been allowed to fight with fake swords. Then all of a sudden he's being proclaimed as a King and is given a crown. He never seems very comfortable with it and he's quite rash and makes quite a few mistakes.

f*** Cersei man, what an annoying b***. The show humanised her a lot more, I feel little remorse for her character in the books thus far.

Renly's change in the tv show is rather odd. He's too effeminate, I felt that they played up to his sexuality too much. I mean, in the books he likes fighting in tournaments (though he's terrible at it) and is supposed to look like Robert even. I don't know, having seen the show first for some characters I picture their show counterparts but I just can't for Renly at all.

I feel like skipping the chapter every time I see Sansa's name. Only reason I don't is because of the chances of seeing the Hound a bit more. Kind of a shame that the majority of the interactions between them weren't put in to the show. I'll probably have more plot related stuff once I get to the second half of the next book, then I won't be going over ground that I already know :p

Yeah, I dunno if it's just because I read the books before watching the show, but the characters in the book just seem more "realistic", if that makes any sense.

And I'm with you on Sansa, her chapters just bored the hell out of me.

Yeah, and I can see why people were pissed with the whole Tulisa thing now. Even though Tulisa is more of an actual character than Jeyne Westerling, how Robb ends up with the latter makes a lot more sense, turning to her after he was depressed hearing about Bran and Rickon vs cliche love story crap.

So I finished a Storm of Swords. Holy s***, that last quarter was incredible. Though I do wonder how the show will pull off

Also I'm glad that it appears A Feast for Crows will have a focus on the Iron Islands and Dorne, they've been quite in the background so far but appear interesting.

Bumping because I'm caught up (well have been for the last few weeks). Here's some predictions for The Winds of Winter

Spoiler: click to toggle

There are other things but I can't tell where they're going. Jaime and Brienne could be anywhere and Kings Landing is anyone's guess at this point. Littlefingers plans I feel probably won't go to plan and Varys is capable of throwing a wrench in anyone's plans.

Flashy Thing!

I just finished A Feast For Crows a few days ago and I'm going to read A Dance With Dragons in maybe a month. Is A Dance With Dragons just as slow as AFFC?

It's slower tbh. It's nearly as long as A Storm of Swords but it has nowhere near the progression that book did. There's a lot of cool stuff that happens don't get me wrong and I think things are set up quite nicely for the next novel, but it could really have done with being trimmed down, some rather pointless happenings in there. Though there's some very interesting POV's in there we haven't had before. Basically, some parts of the story are more enjoyable than others.

I didn't really mind the pace of A Feast for Crows too much though, the only POV I really didn't like was probably Brienne because her progression was so slow. Cersei's POV in that book was probably one of the most enjoyable of the whole series for me.

Bumping because of some very small pieces of info about the series from GRRM at a convention he was at over the weekend. Firstly, next season of Game of Thrones will use stuff from AFFC and ADWD. Apparently the TV show will have a lot of trouble coming up because they didn't include the other Tyrell brothers along with Loras. There is going to be more Robert's Rebellion related stuff in the books in the future. There will be a POV at The Wall. He wishes he'd made Robb a viewpoint character. Also sounds like he's still got quite a bit left to write :(
