I want to have a discussion about nursing. Something else that I've had deep in mind here lately. Nursing was the other career I wanted to pursue if I didn't go after Education. I'm now signed up to start studying for English & History.

But I would like to know what a lot of you think or have experienced with nursing during college and for the job itself. If I were to ever decide to change my major, it'd be for nursing.

But I'd like to know what all it takes in school, the requirements, the years, the different possibilities, etc.

Can ya help me out?

I don't know about your area, but when I look around on job boards, there are always a bunch of places looking for registered nurses, so I think job security is there. From what I've heard, it pays handsomely too. I don't remember what the requirements were from when I was in school, though.

My mum was a nurse her whole life. Of course things might be different now, but from what I know:
She went to the nurse school, which didn't cost anything since she already did some kinda work there. Don't remember for how long she went there...
Back then, there weren't really great requirements - she had good grades and that's it.
After she finished the school there, she already got to work.

I don't know if it gives you the possibility to become a doctor or something. I guess it's likely to just become a higher "rank" of nurse. Don't know what it's called.

Overall, she really liked her job. She gets quite a high income, since she only did that. The only things that were a bit difficult was that she didn't get much sleep and that it sometimes was a bit exhausting. She also had to lift some patients for different reasons, that's why, a few years ago, she ended up with a spinal disc herniation. But I'm sure that's unlikely to happen nowadays.

She enjoyed her job and experienced a lot of things.

Hope that helped though haha

You two were a big help. I like your answers. Is there anyone else?

Here is a decent little site we use at school which lets you search any career. I searched Nurse for you, and it brings up a lot of good info about it.

Do I have to make an account? If yes, it's not letting me -- it's only telling me to sign in.

Ah damn, sorry. I thought it would just let you see the page. I guess it requires a school log in which I suppose I can give you over pm.

I know two nurses. They have crazy hours but they make good money.
Job security is definitely there.

I'm not sure about the US, but here in the UK you tend to need at least one or two years of experience with working with vulnerable people to be considered for most jobs like that.

I want to get into counselling so I looked up some local hospitals, and a lot of them do work experience schemes for people who want to volunteer. I'm sure they'd have tons of nursing stuff, too.

tl;dr: might be worth volunteering
