I wouldn't put it past him. He was already in his final form, and he could go from 1% to 50% in a matter of a second, if he wanted to. Why wouldn't he be able to go from 50 to 100?

he was too confident in his power...and he always underestimated his opponents

Well , he knew he was stronger than namek Goku .But maybe Freeza didnt believe that Trunks was a super saiyan [Golden hair alone doesnt account for SSj , u know] . So he didnt go FP , but used about 80% of his FP .

 I wish Akira Toriyama could answer this for us. You have to remember I feel like they made frieza and his father come to earth just to introduce trunks into the show and start a new plot for the show. They had to hurry up and get rid of frieza and his father.

Well unless you are 100% sure , why waste energy ? He had to fight Goku in a little bit .

 He saw Goku on his way to Earth. He would have time to recover from a fight with Trunks. Also, he has amazing durability.

Then wouldnt King Cold laugh over the fact that Freeza went FP to kill a boy who was acting a Tough guy [SSj] and Freeza was afraid of him ? Freeza had his own pride , which was already mostly shattered by Goku on Namek . Why become a laughing stock again ?

Lesser of two evils, I suppose.

He was confident he would beat Goku with his father. Freeza didn't think Goku had improved.
