Why Namek-saga is the best saga!; My personal view after finishing DBZ and GT

Hello everyone (a lot of spoilers to come btw)

Let me first introduce myself: I am a 20 y.o. guy from Denmark who has just finished his favorite childhood series. So please avoid losing your mind to eventually coming spelling mistakes, gramma-mistakes or weird expressions. And also: My memory may not be the best. With that clear, lets move on to the topic.

This is why I think, that the beginning of DBZ to the end of the Namek saga, is the best.
First of all: You have a fair amount of fighters where each one of them, can enter the story without the feeling of too many characters are involved. I actually have never seen the ending of DB, but as far as I know, Piccolo and Goku (who has just got a son) are the two strongest on earth. On top of that they are also enemies who recently have had a big fight which "surprisingly", Goku has won.
The DBZ starts with Raditz entering the peaceful earth. He turns out to be Gokus evil brother who wants Goku to join his evil force. This is cool, because, we thought Goku was the strongest in the galaxy, but now it turns out there's a whole "world" to explore! This "oh boy, there is so much more!!"-feeling has already vanished in the other sagas, because it has already appeared in the start of the DBZ. They defeat Raditz with great difficulty, and Goku dies. They now get the information that two new Saiyans are on their way to earth and THIS is where "the game" starts. We know they are stronger, we know they are coming, so now all there is left to do, is to train - train hard! So we follow Gohans training, and though this crybaby can be boring at times, this is far more interesting than watching Pan, Goku and Trunks using episode after episode to find Dragon Balls and spend too much time on stupid villains who they could easily kill. On top of that - the crybaby is now the loud teenagegirl Pan - no thanks! Meanwhile, Goku is running his a*** of to reach King Kai to get stronger. And who doesn't just LOVE King Kai and Mr Bubbles. We all expect this great, great Master - without underrating King Kai, and we get this funny guy with his special YET useful training methods.
If you compare this to other sagas; Goku always is training (with Uub, the place he ends after Frieza, somewhere with the Kais), but we never get to see the methods.

So the setup is quite clear when Vegeta and Nappa are about to arrive:
- Two strong Saiyans (and everybody love Saiyans at his point) who have relations to Goku are coming to destroy the earth.
- The earth knows this, and the Z-fighters are doing everything they can to become stronger
- Our hero Goku is getting special training at the great King Kai, who has great personality.
... and so they enter.

Everyone are ready to fight against the two mysterious Saiyans, and when they are fighting Nappa you get a feeling that they might have a chance of winning, even though King Kai always had said they are too strong. The fights are dramatic and costs lifes. Everyone nearly dies until our newborn Goku, stronger than ever comes and makes Nappa look like a weakling.
The big fight against Vegeta, who at this point already have won a lot of points for his coolness from us viewers, is about to start and it turns out to be a great fight to the saiyan limits!
The big ape thing is the typical "oh no, we have no chance anymore" and the fact that the stupid fat guy with the sword, rescues them is just typical Dragon Ball! It is irritating as much as it is charming and funny. Oh well, this little detail is soon forgotten and a new saga is about to start!

Start of Namek-saga:
At this point a lot of "our friends" have died, so the next mission is now to get the namek-dragon balls to save them! Bulma, Krillin and Gohan travel to Namek, a beautiful planet who has civilans on it WHO HAS IDENTITY, CULTURE and HISTORY, unlike all other planets on the other sagas. And at the first minute on Namek, things are about to get started. Vegeta enters Namek, Frieza is already there - Frieza, who we only know as insanely strong compared to all others. So we have 3 challengers and 7 balls to find in this race! But this time Krillin and Gohan don't need any luck to begin with! They use smart tactics which gives them some balls. Destroying Friezas ball-detector was a clever move which gave them an advantage without any unrealistic incidents. This race is entertaining, and on the same time we follow Vegeta and his fight for independence against Friezas force. The small ones are toying around with the strong Frieza without any unrealistic luck - this scenario is rare in other sagas.

The Ginyu force then comes..... as for Goku!
The strong unidentified force and hard-training Goku is about to join "The Race". When the Ginyu force arrives and meet Krillin, Gohan and Vegeta a big fight is about to start. Again its like a tournament where every character gets their shot! Of course only for a while, and now Goku enters the battle, and we can't WAIT to see how his training has payed off! A feeling which is also unusual in other sagas! And again he rocks our worlds! But then Ginyu and Goku changes bodies, and new problems comes with it. This body-change attack is much more "fair" compared to Cell's swallow-strength-increasement and Buu's constantly restoring or Super17 ability to absorb energy. However, I think the change between Bulma and the Frog was too much.
A lot of fighting has been going on and new limits has been reached by our friends, so it is natural that they can be competitive with Frieza at his first form.

Only Frieza left.
Goku is healing, and much like against Vegeta and Nappa, we are only waiting on him to come and save the day. But we still have the feeling that Frieza is much too strong. He also have 3-4 forms (one too many), which decreases the odds of winning the battle! And now the Dragon Balls are no longer available, so only revenge is left for Frieza to hunt. After some episodes with Vegeta, Piccolo and the two others Goku is now back, and the best battle of the whole series is about to begin!
Goku fights and fights, and Frieza seem to be a too strong villain to Goku, and not even the Vegeta-speech seems to wake the true power in Goku. But then, Frieza makes his biggest mistake, he kills Krillin cynically. Gokus best friend for years. This mistake compared to other mistakes made by villains is again much more realistic. Because who would have known that it would wake up the anger in Goku, who will appear the legendary Super Saiyan? Not only does he now has a chance to win, but also Goku finally has a "secret weapon" like all others he has ever faced! He wins in a heroic way, but when the planet is about to explode the sad thing is that Goku might not survive! So he also had to get his way out quick, even though he just won. A detail not seen in other big fights.

After Friezas defeat:
When Frieza dies DBZ loses it's charm. Frieza had an amazing power level, but not a level that was not reachable in an unrealistic matter for Goku. After this the power levels just lose their grip. Gogeta ends up having 60.000.000.000 and when DBZ started Goku had around 425, when battling Vegeta around 15.000, and at the end against Frieza: 10.000.000 circa. The leveling on namek saga was MUCH MORE natural and due to big battles and healing (Senzu beans). After this we NEVER see our friends train, and Vegeta, Goku and Gohan get waaaaaaaaaaay above all the other characters. Before we had a bunch of even Z-fighters, and the strong Goku. Now we have weak Z-fighers who are not competitive to ANY villain from this point, and Gohan, Vegeta and Goku who has trained for years and years and years, and yet Goku's achievements becomes a matter of course!!
And if that wasn't enough - the villains they face: Cell, Buu, Baby, S17, Dragons, has more and more the "upper hand". Cell can suck you up and take all your strength. He never fought for it! Buu was also created by some stupid magician and is undestroyable unless you kill every single cell in one time!

It seems to me that after the Namek-saga the DBZ-crew lost all their good ideas. Goku and the other Saiyans became stronger and stronger for no reasonable reason, getting x1000000 stronger each time we meet them against a new villain. The new villains are now unstoppable, unless they make some silly mistakes that make Goku win! I am aware that Frieza could just have killed Goku early on, but his mistake was killing Krillin, and not to underestimate Goku. The DBZ crew just wanted to make everything bigger, greater, stronger, more immortal and so on. After Cell saga the only one strong enough to make an impact on the villains is Goku. And though he is the main character, the storys of all the others more charming. Former important characters become irrelevant. Gohan, Piccolo, Goten, Vegeta all lose their awesomeness in Dragon Ball GT, while Gohans nerdness totally mess him up. In exchange we get Trunks and Goten, but their childish behavior combined with their outrageous power level and Super-Saiyan abilities make them hard to take serious. Vegeta becomes a Dad - well, if he had to stay he had to get a role in the group I guess.

The Namek Saga
- Where Goku is not only one to rely on
- Where the villains don't have insanely "unrealistic" abilities or power levels
- Where there is a story: The hunt for the Dragon Balls so we can revive our friends, and NOT just "We must protect earth"

That was a lot of words, so I hope anyone will take their time and read it.

ps. I know that this topic probably has been on this forum before, but this is more like an analyze of why Namek saga is best, and not just "I like Buu saga because fusion is cool". :)

I completely disagree. The cell saga was the peak of the series. So much fighting, so much power, so many super saiyans.

Cell Games Saga: Personally think the series should have ended there, would have made for a great ending.
Majin Buu Sagas are still good. But meh.

Things that put me off the Buu Saga:
The treatment of Gohans Character. He had so much build up, hype, and potential, and the majority of it was shot down in favour for Goku and Vegeta. The Ultimate Buff was pretty lame too, sure people of had that kind of ability before: SUPER KAMI GURU!
But it just seemed like a plot device for Kishi to finally give Gohan attention because of how he previously massacred his Character development, but it didn't really make up for it.
The brokenness of Buu as a fighter "overpowered": And it's horrible initial design "Fat Buu".
SSJ3 in general, it had no hype or build up at all, Goku simply just, pulled it out of his a***. A complete a*** pull"
Fusion: Just a plot device, and always has been. At least with Piccolo it made some sense.
But the Kai earrings make me cringe. And the Fusion dance, the worst and retarded concept of them all.

And people loved his SSJ2 appearance, and we lost that.
So yeah:
Gohan's Character Development.
Buu as a Villain.
SSJ3.
Fusion.

Them, and how some of them concluded. Just wrecked it for me a little. I mean, I still like it. But it's the worst of Dragonball Z.

Cell Saga gives us Mr. Satan, and thats awesome! (well, not to begin with)
But I just don't like the fact that Cell is created by some insane docter. All his abilities are designed and created by Dr. Gero, and NOT himself. He has no history, no reputation. He is just this bug who can absorb other fighers and their abilites. Unlike Frieza who had this great Star Wars-look-a-like army build up, taking over the galaxy step by step. He did even have a dad!! Cell and the android just comes out of the blue with super strength and skills.
EVERY villians after Frieza are created by someone only to develop evil - except the Shadow Dragons, but they also have great strength without any reason. I would much more have liked, if there again came som group of viilians from a place in the galaxy to rule the universe. Just like Vegeta&Nappa and Frieza. Their background are interesting, unlike robots, bugs or bubblegum who are only created to take Goku to knew limits.
