Why I think GT failed (although it is entertaining)

Now, don't get me wrong. I really do enjoy GT for what it is. But what it is is not a great anime.

Now, I feel this way because of one reason: the LACK of filler.

Dragonball Z the Anime had a much better flow because it had what? Small filler in between the big events that happened.

But in GT, with the exception of the stupid STUPID STUPID STUPID first 16 episodes of insanely boring and childish pointless crap, there was no filler at all.

It went:
OMG BABY LOL->OMG SUPER 17 LOL -> OMG SHADOW DRAGONS -> OMG OMEGA SHINRON LOL - > OVER

Nothing in between. It was RIDICULOUS event after ridiculous event, with no in between or down time. No funny filler, no comedic relief, it was just too much. They crammed more content in GT in 64 episodes than they did in DBZ. It's too much. Too much too fast, and that makes it really hard to watch.

I really feel if they spread out the content a bit more, it would have been more entertaining to watch. Just like DBZ.

There was a small bit of "filler" in between Baby and S17. It was the brief tournament where Goku got distracted by Vegeta and knocked out of the ring by some random kid.

I agree. There were no breaks in between the sagas.

Good Guys: "Yay we beat Baby"
"Super 17: "lol whos that? ima kill you"

I know there was no episode break between arcs, but I vaguely remember the narrator saying something about a few months break between Baby arc and Super 17 arc. And from Baby arrived on Earth to Baby was defeated, it went 50 weeks, which is a long time for only a few episodes duration.

GT did have some in-universe gaps between the first two major arcs, but out-of-universe that was glossed over in favor of, "f***, bring in the next villain, Goku needs someone to fight!"

Everything about the Super 17 saga was a little abhorrent, from the trivializing of iconic characters (Uub, Gohan, Vegeta) to the blatant rehash of a previous villain.

To say nothing of the asinine PIS ending.

Yeah I felt it was a little rushed as well and got convoluted and it was really dumb how a beat up Trunks just stumbled to the door. Thats the only part I felt should have had some kind of bridge of events.

Other than that though, I understand how the Super 17 led directly too the dragon ball thing and how Space led to the Baby Saga

My biggest frustration was that instead of Goten and Trunks talking about fusion during the Omega saga, they should have been confident and jumped the gun and fused right then like they would have in DBZ. They could have stalled alot better like that...

That part just really pissed me off, like they forgot they are stronger together than apart even though they are talking about it, they still attempt to attack separate... smfh

Actually that's what I liked about GT. It was hard hitting and fast paced. I love Z, no doubt, but there were arcs that just dragged on, and on, and on, and the character/story development pay-off was low save maybe Season four. But seriously, we have to spend an entire season on the Islands CHASING Cell? Not fighting, CHASING! It took 50 episodes to kill that guy and we did 3 story arcs in GT by then. I'm glad stuff got accomplished. I also didn't mind the lack of gap. No training that ultimately doesn't pay off an lead to more training.

I hated that in Z. They got prep time and still couldn't get s*it right. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z was at it's best when they had to react to a threat instead of pro-act. Prep for Androids 19 and 20, wrapped up nicely and with very little suspense (Sure Goku had his heart attack, but they already had the medicine.) Androids 17 and 18 show up and curbstomp our best boys, NOW that scares me! What are we gonna do now? Go train, we have 30 seconds before they wipe out the planet theoretically, it kept them on their toes.

Prep time for the Saiyans, long, played out, and didn't get them anywhere. Reacting to Frieza on a Dragon Ball hunt, they fought an entire war Guerilla style!

I always here about the training and prep but I think that's the absolute WORST of Dragon Ball is the training. Hence why they only did a couple montages in Dragon Ball and cut to the tournaments. Show us results, don't tell how it happened. Thats Screen Writing 101.

Whew, that was a nice rant. Ok, counterpoint placed and everyone should be antagonized or thinking "Wtf is up with this loser lolz", shall we continue?

I remember, Grid pointing out that SSJ kid Goku vs. SSJ Vegeta at the bridge had the potential to be a filler since Vegeta had no business challenging Goku like he did. Of course they didn't fight, though.

You know, this made me smile. It's true and you said in such an excited way that it was fun to read. I especially agree with what you said about showing the result of the training, not the training itself; it's always fun to see how powerful a character has gotten and then maybe seeing an explanation through a flashback or two.
