Background: This fanfic contains many OC's and a first will seem to have little to do with the Dragon Ball Universe but it will in time. Year of the Cat feature Linx, a member of a clan trapped in a forgotten village. His mission is to find the Dragon Balls and free his people, but this isn't the Dragon Ball Universe as we know it.

Prolouge: Kitten Kall

The hard downward motion struck its target against the surface. Repetitive blow after blow until the surface was dyed red. The strikes did not relent despite the fact a pool of red liquid swirled around. No solids were left by the time the crushing blows finished. A finger entered the liquid, before layering it upon a face. Linx was prepared for the upcoming tournament, the whole tribe had been waiting for this moment for hundreds of years. His war paint was just being adjusted and then it was time to go. A sense of excitement swept over the whole village, Linx strolled through the trees mentally preparing himself. This day was truly the day to define his life, not only was it the day of his tournament but the first fight he would have since the thirteenth anniversary of his training, his eighteenth birthday. Not only his first fight as a man, but the sheer scale of the tournament was astounding. Every villager would be there, any skill admired yet any slip as well. As he entered he shed his sword and placed it in the chest. Deep breath. Begin.
Linx walked out onto the arena and joined the rest of the fighters. The Grand Chief began his speech.
"My citizens, for hundreds of years we have waited for this day. Our numbers have now dwindled into one hundred, the prophesied number. Thirty three from each of the clans, and myself. As we all know, hundreds of years ago, we were a flourishing island, full of life and beauty, but a curse was placed on us. A great veil was placed around our island, trapping us in and sealing our fate as a forgotten realm. A once sanctuary of life and growth, is now nearly gone. But a prophecy was told, once our numbers lowered to but a mere hundred, a tournament was to be held. From this tournament would emerge three fighters, one from each clan. The three who would escape our prison, and release through the power of the legendary Dragon Balls. Thirty two fighters stand here today, three will emerge victorious. Begin."
The Cat Clan leader took lead of his eight fighters and took them to their arena.
"You have all been great fighters, you have trained without relent for this day, and I am proud of you all. One of you will today venture outside our sanctuary and free us all. It doesn't matter who it is, you are all champions." a single tear fell down the old leaders face.
"Ha, this is mine. We all know I'll be going through that seal with a dirty dog and a dumb bear. I'll save our people." a huge built figure boasted with an arrogant look upon his face.
"Fighting spirit, I like it Felix, but save it for the tournament. You're up first." the clan leader pointed to the centre stage. Linx quickly looked to see if it was he who had to face the behemoth first. To his relief he saw that his match was the fourth. His eyes flicked back to the ring as he saw the two competitors prepare to battle. As soon as the battle began Felix stood tall and let out a blood curdling roar. His competitor seemed intimidated for a moment before realising the importance of this battle. He regained composure and ran at Felix, jumping last minute straight over his head and landing a hard elbow straight to the back of the head. Felix didn't move. A confident laugh emerged from his lips. Quick as a flash he whirled round and grabbed his opponent by the throat. Fear drained across the man's face as he was lifted from the floor. "Haha, you made the top eight? That's a joke." hissed Felix as he threw him like a ragdoll into the air. Felix turned to the other competitors and stared them dead in the eyes. The body fell and was met in the stomach by a cruel knee from Felix. This match was over. The confidence slowly began to drain from Linx.

Linx began to meditate before his match, he needed to clear his mind of the barbaric display he had witnessed from Felix. "I can beat him. I can beat him. I can beat him." Linx focused on nothing but this mantra, he ran over and over in his mind. The peace was finally disturbed by the Clan leader informing Linx it was his turn. Standing opposite him was Kher, a sparring partner and his cousin. They both trained together in preparation for this tournament, but he had had hoped he wouldn't have to face her as his first match. Both fighters took up their stance and began the mind game of eye contact. Linx stared deep into the eyes of Kher and was taken aback. He didn't see the loving eyes of his cousin, this was the glare of a warrior. Kher was first off the mark with a pounce followed by a swipe aimed straight for his head. A hand managed to block the swipe before a leg followed up, attempting to sweep Kher's legs. A jump back, elbow jab and front kick was the reply. Both were blocked but it left an opening in Linx's guard, which was found by the heel of Kher. Wind gushed out of his stomach, that one hurt. Before he had time to respond, swipe after swipe was aimed for his head and chest. This ferocious style was too much too handle, the attacks easy enough to block but the pace hard to keep up with. Kher pounced back to her starting spot and raised her guard, she was recuperating. Linx began to catch his breath before he got a strange taste in his mouth. A bitter metallic taste. He raised a hand to his cheek and found he had drawn blood. The sight of this changed Linx, he was now completely in the mind frame. This wasn't sparring, this was the real deal. A hand flew past his face as he narrowly dodged a strike, a kick was sent to his ribs but his knee dealt with that. An opening. Linx rammed his head downwards with all the force he could muster. His forehead soon collided with the nose of his cousin with brutal force. The girl crumpled to the floor declaring him the winner.

A familiar voice called Linx's name. "Linx get off the arena!" it was his father.
"Dad, I know she is family, but I, Dad, I.." Linx began to stammer.
"No son, you did well, but it is my fight now." his father chuckled as he took his place.
Linx looked to see who his father would have to face, but it didn't matter he was sure he could win. Until he saw Felix stood at the opposite end. Felix began his death stare as he stood in his stance. "You know, you're not fooling anyone with that persona Felix, why not enjoy yourself."
"Whatever old man"
Blinding speed. A furious blow. Felix was on the ground.
"Show some respect boy!"
Felix got to his feet, bringing his hands to his nose. He was bleeding. Felix never bleeds. Like a bull seeing red he charged at Linx's father. A kick flew straight into Felix's head, but the force did not stop him. His momentum carried, bringing his right shoulder down to dip and hook his opponent into the air. Before the body had time to land, Felix delivered blow after blow into his stomach. When the body did land however the assault did not stop. Hits rained down on the body, beating it to a pulp. "Enough Felix!" the Clan Leader bellowed. At the sound of this voice Felix began to relent. He turned and looked at Linx.
"Your daddy isn't much is he?"
Rage brewed in Linx's veins like never before. "You monster! I'll win my next fight and destroy you in the final!" he roared.
Felix just laughed.

Linx walked onto the arena. He was now determined to win and claim vengeance for his father. It appeared he was too wrapped up in his own thoughts as he didn't even notice that his next opponent was his mentor.
"Linx! Calm down. For years I have trained you and I have seen what you can achieve. I want this fight to be the best you can give. For that I need you to concentrate."
"Yes Sensei." Linx bowed his head. This was soon met by a foot to his face.
"Never take your eyes of an opponent!" his master furiously shouted before making a flying leap for him him. His foot connected with Linx head but not before a fist landed in his stomach. Both fighters were taken aback. Linx launched the next attack, furious speed ensued with punch after punch, dodge after dodge, block after block. The struggle lasted five minutes before each fighter held off, catching their breath. "You.. fight well Linx. But... perhaps not well... enough to beat Felix." gasped Sensei.
Linx growled before once again launching himself at his master. Angrily he threw swipes but with no real guard, and as such Sensei sent him crashing to the ground. "Your emotions should not be your sovereign." Sensei remarked before preparing a final blow.
"No... no.. I have to win. I must avenge father. I must free my people." Linx began to pant. "NO!" he roared as he sprung up catching his masters foot. He stretched his arm up into the air before slamming his master down upon the hard floor. "I am my own sovereign Sensei."
Linx and Felix was the final bout.

Linx inhaled deeply. He tried to clear his mind and focus on the battle. Yet the silence was disturbed.
"Haha, this is the final? Why not just accept I've won. Save the pretty boy a beating." the confident voice of Felix boomed. "Now would be the smart time to forfeit Linx. Well go on. No? Well be sure to say hello to your daddy in the medic room for me." Felix laughed whilst maintaining fearsome eye contact. The fighters stared at each other, each scanning the other for any sign of weakness. A simple break of guard and a strike would be dealt. The air whistled as a mighty force rocketed in to Linx's head.
One. Two. Thr...
Linx was back on his feet, dazed and wary, but on his feet.
"You should of stayed down Linx, because now, I have to crush you." the behemoth roared as he hurtled towards Linx. A large fist cracked the arena where Linx had been but a moment ago. A right hook to the ribs. A left elbow to the chin. A kick to the chest. Linx had forced his opponent back a bit and gained important breathing time. He swiftly ducked as he felt the air above blow his hair with force as a huge force swung over the target. An uppercut. A left hook to the temple. A right swing. Linx's arm was caught. Felix snarled as he squeezed tightly upon the wrist. A headbutt. Linx was dazed.
"Haha you call that a headbutt? I'll show you how it's done." hissed Felix as he brought his head down with force. Linx body sank to the floor.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven.
Linx staggered to his feet. Blood now gushed from his nose and he felt really lightheaded. He tried to snap out of it but his vision began to blur, Linx was hurt. A mighty roar snapped him out of the daze as he barely dodged the kick aimed for his gut. Before he could attack, another kick came flying at him. Pain shot up the left side of the body as the kick made contact with Linx's left hip. A punch followed and folded the fighter in half, but he barely managed to stay on his feet.
"It's a good thing I hospitality your father. It would be a real shame were he to see how much of a disappointment his son is."
Rage overwhelmed Linx as he flew at Felix. His right hand just flew past his targets head. Felix smiled. Linx curled his hand and brought it hard into the shoulder of the behemoth, driving his knee into his gut. Felix's smile had gone. Linx stepped back before driving his right fist straight into the face of his rival.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five.Six. Sev..
"Not bad, you knocked me down, and made me bleed. Playtime's over." Felix ran at Linx at hit him in the stomach with unthinkable force. A hand wrapped around Linx's throat and lifted him into the air. "You know that was a real good shot. The best I've received, but it wasn't good enough. It's a shame I am the strongest of the Cats and there is no one near my level. What can i expect though, I trained myself, you were trained by that old fool. What could he teach you that I couldn't teach myself?" Felix looked at Linx and saw that he was now turning blue. "Down you go." he launched Linx into the air before jumping and slamming him back down.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine.
Sluggishly Linx stood back up, beaten, battered and bruised. "I... I.."
"Got something to say Linx?" snarled Felix, clearly peeved his opponent was able to stand.
"I.. want to.. answer your....your question" panted Linx.
"What? What question you fool? Shut up and fight!" Felix roared as he took up a stance.
"You could...nt... teach your... self this." Linx threw his hands to his sides and began to gather strength. Soon an aura began to swirl around him as he began to roar.
Felix looked on in amazement and slight fear. His stance slightly began to slip and his guard lower. Game over.
"POWER PAW!" yelled Linx as he dashed towards a frozen Felix. His hand shot forward with great speed and his palm smashed into the stomach of the behemoth. Felix was sent flying to the other end of the arena.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten.
Linx fell to the floor.

"Linx.. Linx..." words softly pierced his ears. He began to stir.
"Wha... What? " Linx' eyes rolled open. "Tournament." He began to rise to his feet.
"Easy, easy." His master softly spoke. "Here drink up." He poured medicine down his throat.
Instantly life fueled the aching fibres of Linx's body. Fatigue drained as it was replaced with raw energy. A fire burned in his heart as it it pumped the red hot blood through his veins. "I have to fight sensei!" he lept to his feet.
"You won Linx, it's over. You used the Power Paw despite my advice."
"I... did? I did! I remember! I won! Sensei I won!" happyness filled the fighter.
"Yes but at what cost? You nearly died! I told you that you were not ready to utilise the technique. Channeling that raw power can overcome and destroy the body. Never use it again."
"But sensei, I won. I didnt die..." Linx was confused. Why was his master so dissapointed?
"Next time we may not have the milk on hand to help you. Or perhaps you will rip yourself apart entirely beyond saving. Now go to the clearing, the Grand Chief awaits."
Linx ran with utmost speed. Trees flew past as the boy paced through the forest. He did it. He was the Cat Champion. It was he who climbed the ranks and became his tribes strongest. He had overcome his father, his sensei and the monster Felix. Vines up ahead. His hand flew to his swords hilt. Linx did not lower his pace, he swung the sword as he ran slicing the vines without sacrificing and speed. Sword sheathed he jumped up onto a branch leaping tree to tree he saw three figures waiting by the veil.
"So, it is you Linx." the Grand Chief spoke. "Join Nina and Ursa quick."
Linx pounced down beside the other champions. Ursa, the Bear Champion. Legs like tree trunks and arms that could crush a man between the forearm and bicep. A true monster. Nina, the Dog Champion. A slender body with sleek black hair. Deadlier than she appears.
"Now, you three fought the odds to get here, all rightful warriors. Times are desperate, if we do not lift the veil, then our numbers will diminish to the point of death. I have enough power to open the veil for three warriors to exit. Once outside you must gather those Dragon Balls and free us from our prison. You are our last hope. Understood?"
"Yes Chief!" all three warriors shouted in union.
"Then good luck." Chief began to roar as a huge aura began to swirl round his body. Trees began to uproot as huge power surged around the clearing. The sky darkened as lightning struck the ground, wind pierced the air with deafening speed. The aura around the Chief grew to enormous height. Three aura balls emerged and struck the three champions. "BE READY TO GO!" bellowed Chief. The aura consumed the Chief before a huge explosion of aura battered the clearing. A hole was ripped in the veil. Ursa and Nina instantly jumped through. It began to close.
"Here goes..." Linx dived through.
