Last time I checked, it sucked. Not only was it a poor release in Japan it was a poor release outside such as in the US as well. I'm sure someone has more direct knowledge on this however.

I'm pretty sure GT actually ended early due to it's low ratings.

GT was not successful in Japan. It was cut short due to poor ratings there. Fans felt it was a poor, lighthearted knockoff of their beloved anime.

I know this because I have been to Japan 3 times and have many Japanese contacts there.

Actually from what I understand, GT was only slated for about 40 Episodes (Basically the Black Star and Baby Sagas) but pulled out a second season and then the TV Movie "A Hero's Legacy." You know, same way that Beast Machines pulled out a second season after TFormers G1/G2's 4 seasons and Beast War's 3 seasons (I know, I keep comparing Transformers to Dragon Ball, but that's functionally our closest American Equivalent when it comes down to production and lore).
