Why do characters killed by King Piccolo and his minions get trapped in Limbo?

In the Dragonball episode "Lost and Found," it is mentioned that those who die at the hands of King Piccolo and his minions get their souls trapped in eternity in a place called Limbo. What makes getting killed by him and his monsters any different then suffering at the hands of tyrants like Freiza and Cell? I always thought the Limbo concept was disturbing.

It's called a plothole.

In Dragonball, King Piccolo was a Demon, not a Namekian. Toriyama hadn't expanded that storyline yet. He added that in during Z, it didn't exist.

Therefore, as a demon, this was Piccolos ability, to trap souls or whatever.

Almost. Those killed by demonic souls are in a state of unrest and cannot travel to the after life. The fact that Goku could travel was a sign of Piccolo's immense evil dissipating. And Piccolo's magic was of the Dark Variety, so to an extent he was the demon prince. Demon just being a state of mind and a relative term. Kami mentioned this a little ways after Goku died when Piccolo actually started baby-sitting Gohan and showed some affection for the boy. So the plot hole has a lot more plot cement than we give it credit for.

actually, piccolo and kami being aliens was already decided by AT when he revealed kami, so when that little bit of info was dropped, piccolo was already namekian. the thing is, he was also a demon.

demon is not a race, it is a divine rank, like god or kai. it refers to people so evil they corrupt the world around them simply by being there.

piccolo daimao, piccolo jr. (initially), daimao's minions, dabura, and kid buu are the only confirmed demons. frieza is likely one as well, since if krillin made it to the afterlife, he should have kept his body, being the second greatest hero alive at that point in the series.
list of canon sources:

the DB manga, and the Dr. Slump manga as it applies to the crossover during the rra saga.

list of non canon sources:

everything else, regardless of origin, format, or quality.

for those that blindly follow word of god

Krillin nor Vegeta made it to the afterlife. Vegeta took the time to ask Piccolo in the Buu saga what happens with the whole check in, keeping your body, hell process. Krillin also is stooped when he appears back to life on earth. Both men were sent to limbo or as some like to call it, purgatory after Frieza killed them.
