I don't really respect FUNI as a successful dubbing agency, so I usually don't watch these. The only reason I buy Dragon Ball from them is because it's easily obtainable.

They improved their voices and script with Kai, but Sean Schemmel has never nailed Goku's true personality even nearly as well as Nozawa has, and that's what kills the dub for me. Schemmel's vernacular with Goku is way too generic. It's also a bit of a mood killer having Chris Sabat voice every character and its second cousin.

It's not as bad in Kai as it was in the original dub (when it comes to Sabat voicing everyone). In the original dub, he voiced the entire Ginyu force (except the cap'n, I think). Five characters that were all on the screen at the same time were voiced by one actor. It just goes to show how much Funi was stretched thin in the voice talent, but there's a definite improvement in Kai, not just in the amount of actors, but also the quality of the acting.

As for Masako Nozawa, it's just a little weird that a 70 year old woman voices the entire Son family. Sean Schemmel's voice certainly suits Goku better IMO, and I've always felt his acting was spot-on.

If Goku was a western comic book hero, than I'd agree with you, but you couldn't be more wrong in my opinion. Goku's naive, stupid, and always speaks in an unconventional manner. He says stuff equivalent to "ain't" and "nothin", and he's never had a real education.
Nozawa portrays him the way he's supposed to be portrayed, while Sean Schemmel portrays the guy as poetically brilliant with his "Ally to good" speeches.

Schemmel's portrayal in no way fits the Toriyama portrayal of him, and makes him out to be some educated westernized superhero. Sean Scemmel could voice someone like the Flash or Superman, and be a better fit.
