Super Saiyan among Super Saiyans

All right, first off, for this topic to work, you're going to have to temporarily forget Ultimate Gohan and all of the EoZ stuff -- anything after Kid Buu's defeat that is. Would you say that during the Buu saga, the Saiyans were approaching their limits? I think it very much looked like it from the training results: - After 7 years of Otherworld training, [which training conditions proved to be better than those of Earth according to Goku], Goku surpassed SSJ2 Kid Gohan (Cell games) but not by a staggering amount according to Piccolo's comment about Majin Vegeta - Vegeta, not fortunate enough to have the same training conditions as Goku, is only able to yield a power increase that still has him remaining below SSJ2 Kid Gohan (Cell games) post 7 years. So, if we had never seen Ultimate Gohan's power or the *cough haxxed* power of Goku at the EoZ budokai, would you think they were nearing their limits? |

I think they hit a plateau, but could still get stronger very slowly. New types of training would be needed for a dramatic jump in power. "Muscle Confusion" training techniques like in P90X allows for continued growth with fewer plateaus until you reach your peak. |

I think it more likely that they had exhausted the possibilities of their current training regimin at least. Perhaps rather that physical training it was more mental training that was needed to allow them to continue to allow their strength to grow - it worked for Piccolo

Potentially true, Image training worked pretty well for Krillin on the way to Namek too. Helped him keep up with Gohan anyway before the Frieza fight. As far as limits go, from a thematic view, I think that would have made the Buu Saga more interesting. Dragon Ball/Z is about courage and charging forward, facing challenges and improving, beating yourself before you can beat someone else. And you know, love and friendship and all that other jazz, but mainly the never give up attitude and going for everything with 100%. And it's in-universe and in-character for them to have charged forward either way. Maybe if they couldn't beat the physical walls they would have developed other mental or creative powers. That's kinda why I liked Gotenks so much in that arc. He was goofy but he came up with creative and ingenius uses for his unique ki and powers, when Ki was just limited to energy balls, bombs, rays and propulsion (aka flight). I mean, do you really think Goku is smart or creative enough to develop a living, thinking creature that functions as a bomb and can fight from long range with energy attacks? Say what you will about Gotenks but he's a badass and a genius. So yeah, I think the Saiyans would just finally start working on fighting smarter instead of harder, but that's just me. |

Release the power within you.

I think they can hit a wall, but their potential resets as soon as they break through it. Sorta like how Vegeta didn't get much stronger at all when he went into the hyperbolic time chamber a 2nd time, he had hit a wall that he couldn't break through, but he eventually did and got stronger as we saw in the series. |

Well if we want to count BoTG, there's God form. After that comes Tom Cruise form, and then I'm pretty sure existence implodes. |

I agree with what you said SSJ1993. I believe they were definitely slowing down in their progress. This is why I think Goku went after Super Saiyan 3, and why they tried to ascend in the first place. They need to keep discovering new forms to obtain power, as it is very tough to keep powering up your base. |

I had always believed the 7 year gap gains to be minimal due to lack of motivation more than anything. General: No imminent threat on the Earth/Universe. Vegeta: No Goku to surpass, feeling of complete defeat following Cell Games. Gohan: No Goku coercing him into training/fighting. Goku: Likely no one worth fighting in Other World, so although he aims to better himself, without an immediate goal in sight it would slow gains. This situation is exactly why Roshi entered tournaments to defeat his own students in Dragon Ball. Once you believe there's no one worth fighting, your progress slows. |

It's well-established that they had reached them. The Super Saiyan 3 form in itself was expressed to indicate it, with the whole Buu era revolving around them surpassing their limits from unnatural ways. In recent interviews, Toriyama pretty much states that they were at their maximum, that there was no Super Saiyan forms higher (Super Saiyan God being the exception), and even implying that Goku and co. were weaker at the end of the manga on account of their age: "The fact is, I thought, “Man, I really made everyone old in the last chapter of the manga”. I even gave Vegeta a mustache (laughs). So, I chose this period because everyone had got to maximum strength. A few years after the “Majin Buu arc”, and before Pan’s birth." "they were good ideas for presenting a crisis for the main characters, who had grown so strong that they’d reached a point where there was nothing higher." I believe Saiyans can hit a wall, but they always break through that wall and keep going. So, I don't really think a Saiyan has a limit, but sometimes only limited by the form they use like SS3. |

If a saiyan were to be immortal, I'm unsure if they would just continuously get stronger and stronger. I think there are certain limits, especially when a saiyan gets to the end of their lifespan. |

Indeed, only their age can pose a limit. But now that Goku transformed into a God, can there be anymore possible form? I mean, what can surpass a God? A Super God?:)) |
