Apparently being a 3 dimensional character with some character development and depth is not a good thing in the world of Dragonball Z Fandom.

Lmao Videl.

Aw, I loved Great Saiyaman. He's kinda reminiscent of Spidey for me and really keeps Gohan down to Earth. You know, like a real teenager that has planet busting super powers.
Videl was kinda take her or leave her for me, but they did get the very best romance in the entire series.
Gohan is one of my absolute favorite characters in the entire series just because he's developed so well and he's radically more interesting that Goku and Vegeta ever were.

Live for something or die for nothing

Just want to add.. I also HATE how Gohan is such a nerd. He was awesome/bada** in the cell games and if he continued to be like that (training and studying on the side) he would have easily been my favorite character. You can have character depth and development without being a nerdy student Lol.

I do agree however that he was never interested in fighting but in protecting. Only because he was raised that way.

Imo he should have kept training in times of peace. Just to be sure he would be able to protect the ones he loves. (Which would fit in his character/personality)

Cause Chi Chi wanted him to be a professor. He's big pimpin when he's older because of it.

I really think him wanting to go to school and be a regular guy really does speak to his character. He has two legacies and I feel like DBZ doesn't acknowledge the fact that a Saiyan hybrid is half Saiyan AND half Human. It's perfectly legitimate for Gohan to explore his human half. I think most of his super strength and martial arts development came from nurture (Aka his exposure to Piccolo and Goku) and even then he just wanted be sure his friends didn't get hurt. Naturally Gohan is a gentle soul and if he doesn't have to fight then he won't. I think it makes sense that he wouldn't actively train. Perhaps just to keep in shape, but not obsessively like Goku, he's got other priorities. You know, being something other than a "Goku Jr."
The Great Saiyaman kinda embraces the Saiyan half of Gohan that does like to do the right thing, like his father, and bring down any challenger that shows up. Granted it's goofy, but Akira-Sensei writes comedy. It's just his style, and that happens to shine through with Gohan.
What does Goku do? I wanna fight bad guys, then eat, then go find more bad guys to fight. I still love my family, but I'd rather go train for a few years. Is if for the greater good? Yeah, but it's still a little off putting to know that Goku would rather train than anything else, especially being raised earthling. Also an example of Goku's nature holding fast.
Is Future Gohan more badass? significantly! But then again, you can say the same thing about Trunks. A post apocalyptic Future dominated by genocidal machines that force you to fight just to survive, never the less for the freedom of humanity, kinda makes you tougher. Gohan, like many individuals, is a product of his own nature and his environment. Again, I think he was handled nicely and realistically. As the author got better at portraying characters in non fantastic situation, he just shows how much better the Saiyan kids do at living with peace than the other Z-Fighters do. They've changed with the time and I think that's fine.

That and... what's the measure of a non-badass? Krillin cuts through mountains with a laser Frisbee, that's pretty badass. Piccolo can change size at will, create and destroy matter, and drill holes with a laser, that's badass. Not only is Trunks a great fighter, he's also a brilliant scientist and technician, making him much more useful in a variety of situations compared to Vegeta and Goku, that's pretty badass. Vegeta more than anyone else in cannon has shown to be able to survive in incredibly troublesome environments like the ocean floor and deep space. That's badass. And Gohan can balance school, family, super heroing and being the legacy of a legendary warrior race all while retaining the power to hulk out and atomize planets if he sneezes while he's ticked off. Which part of all that nonsense isn't badass?

Gohan could have been the greatest fighter ever, and could have lived a kickass life blowing up everyone who wronged him or his friends. But instead, he chose to live a humble, normal life like the rest of humanity.

If you wanna get REAL deep with this, you could even say that Gohan's choice is Akira Toriyama's validation of the human life. Even when he did have such fantastic potential, he chose to live normally, like us! When you think about the other option he had, isn't flattering to know that our boring, seemingly meaningless lives are still completely desirable to such a cool guy?

It was his mothers dream for him to be a scholar, and that dream was embedded inside Gohan, I see chichi telling Gohan to study more during Freeza saga, maybe all the telling to study made him study unlike most of us.

She cares more about Gohan's studies than the safety of the world..

If I recall correctly that's like stated in Kai at some point during the time he's fighting Cell.
I really do hate that woman.

Yeah, she doesn't have common sense, but that's a mother, always thinking what's best for her child. :D
