The self-explosion or destruction that the user is using, there is no gap. Now, Vegeta remained quite long while using that, this is because his body could handled the explosion but he kept on doing it so that he knew that the explosion he is doing is not enough. Now to understand the logic, the self-explosion is like, When a person is doing it, He represents as a grenade. So if the person does it, he makes him self like a bomb/grenade. Majin Buu survived because of his regeneration ability, If it was Cell or Frieza, they would have died easily. \ Now you might say that it doesn't make sense. But it does, Majin Buu has a jelly like skin, while Cell had hard skin like a reptile. Thus when doing a kamehameha from Gohan, he was fried to pieces. That's all.
