All things Devil May Cry. I'll start by posting a plot bridge that should clear up the Devil Trigger Ambiguity between DMC 3 and DMC 1: Half Blood Devil Trigger Theory Intro Devil Trigger (DT) is a power possessed by demons which allows them to release their full potential. Full-bloods seem to be able to DT indiscriminately. If you were fortunate enough to unlock Dante Must Die mode in any of the games then you came to realize this soon enough; there even exists a chapter in Devil May Cry 3 in which the enemies are DT. Despite this, it almost seems as if the protagonist Dante had to, canonically, unlock DT twice (DMC 3, DMC (1)) and could not DT without some specific sort of Devil Arm (DA). Although, this may or may not be the case, the lack of story in DMC 1 is inadvertently the cause of ambiguity.
I would hope to resolve the DT ambiguity that occurs between prequel, DMC 3, and its predecessor, DMC. Screw DMC 2... DMC 3 By the time Dante unlocks DT, Vergil seems to have already unlocked it. I'll assume that his and Vergil's DT forms are associated with the respective choice of Devil Arms (DA), although, it is hinted that Rebellion unlocked as Dante used DT for the first time; Rebellion and Yamato were both previously choice DA of Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, and were handed down to each son; they both are able to DT with their respective DA because of their bloodline. I'll mention Arkham's possession of Sparda to support the DT-lineage argument. Arkham becomes malformed when attaining Sparda's power before his inevitable defeat by the Brothers Sparda. Assuming that Rebellion was always on hand, (as was the case for Yamato with Vergil) the other attained DA (Nevan, Beowulf, etc) only seem to augment Dante's DT Rebellion form and abilities; the DA themselves may not be as potent as to actually distinguish themselves as DT. Note that both Vergil and Dante had attained DA Beowulf and took to their respective trademark DT forms, albeit augmented slightly. Canonically, Sparda's power is sealed within Force Edge; Force Edge needs both pieces of the amulet to unlock. This would imply that little to no power is emitted from Force Edge. Recall the final confrontation with Vergil; he fights using his Yamato and Force Edge, although he seems to be pulling out all stops, he also seems to be overreaching; his ultimate moves (w/ DT) place him in a bit of a daze; if he is getting anything from Force Edge, I would assume that it is very little. DMC (1) Dante seems to have retired Rebellion in favor of Force Edge; in the opening scene of the game, a sword that resembles Rebellion is impaled in a demon skull. Recall my assumptions; Dante previously used DT through DA Rebellion; Force Edge seals Sparda's energy; thus no DT until Dante subdues DA Alastor. DA Alastor and Ifrit seem to be of higher presence and consciousness (to the point where, even in weapon form, they assail unfortunates) than the previously acquired DMC 3 DA, last we saw them. They allow Dante to DT without Rebellion and have distinct forms and abilities; Dante's DA in DMC 3 did little more than augment DT Rebellion's appearance and abilities; recall that while DA Beowulf was shared between Vergil and Dante, the brothers maintained the traits of DT Yamato and DT Rebellion respectively; I would assume this not be the case if they both had shared DA Alastor; DA Alastor would likely dominate both of their DT appearances and abilities. Vergil (Nero Angelo) used DT when confronting Dante for the last time; I would assume that he had done so sans Yamato (no; the giant Zweihander is not Yamato; DMC 3 Nero Angelo was just an unlockable alternate Vergil). Several assumptions could be made to explain this:
After DMC 4 seemed to just be consistent enough with DMC 3 and DMC (1) not to further screw into DT ambiguity. I would hope that this theory covers it well enough. |
